What kind of magazines do you buy?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

What kind of magazines do you buy?

Post by Curlypaul »

When I got back into gaming about 3 years ago now I scouted around the newagents and decided on the Official Nintendo mag as it had more DS content than any other mag and I liked the childish banter, it reminded me of the mags I used to buy when I was a kid and I didnt feel that the official status got in the way too much.

Just lately though I grow tired of the childish nature and I'm finding I'm occasionally buying Games tm, which is a sort of up market multiformat mag with loads of interviews and in depth analysis of games and genres. I also enjoyed the RetroAction magazine that Racket linked to the other day. I think paper printed magazines are sadly gonna be extintc pretty quickly - almost all of the news I read in them I have already gleaned from the internet which has the advantage of instant distrubition.

So what sort of Games press do you read?

Penthouse.

Nah, just kidding. I don't currently reach much in the way of official game press, unless somebody here links it.

I currently get Game Informer because it came with the edge card. The reviews are decent and it has some nice feature articles. I don't know whether I would pay for it by itself though. I used to get EGM, I signed up for a free sub somewhere on the net for it. I also just re-upped for Maximum PC. I think it's one of the better mags out there right now.

I mostly get everything else I want from the net.

Damn, I thought I'd be the first Economist reader, but I got beat to the punch. That's my only subscription. I also go into Barnes & Noble once a month to buy Retro Gamer, because it's actually cheaper than a subscription due to the $ to pound conversion. Even at $12 an issue, I'm alright with the price, because it's so well written. Check it out at http://www.retrogamer.net. Pretty lively forum community, too, although I prefer Racketboy for retro discussions.
I run the 8/16-bit retro site TimeWarpGamer and if you want to follow the latest updates, check me out on Twitter.

WIRED

B2 shut down and the rest I just never got round to reading

I also got free subs to EGM, but did little more than flip through them.

I read game informer, but that's only due to the fact that I get it for having the edge card. Don't read any other gaming mags...I don't even browse through them in the stores like I would do when I was younger. Just too much information on the internet.

Non-gaming related, I have a subscription to Hockey News, Fortune and Business Week.

I hardly read mags at all anymore. I used to read Hardcore Gamer to find out what import games are worth looking into, but they recently shut down. EGM I read, but they are shutting down too. Used to read Official PlayStation Magazine, but when they decided demo-discs were so last gen, I decided their magazine was too. (I know I can download the demos for the PS3, but maybe I like have them on discs so they don't take up space on my hard-drive. Crazy idea, I know.) PC Gamer is probably the only gaming mag I read at all anymore.

Non-gaming related, ImagineFX. It'd expensive because it's a British mag, but its worth it. Haven't picked one up in a while, but it's hard to resist when I do find one on the newsstands. Also read Wired and PC World on occassion. Used to read NewType USA, but again, it shut down. It's 'replacement' magazine was complete garbage too.
