That's the thing. For me, I don't care. I am getting Shenmue 3. I don't need to know how well the product will turn out in the end. I want it. I will pay for it. I will pay more than the retail asking price for it. I'm fine with that.Erik_Twice wrote:He's not wrong, it's true that Shenmue 3, like lots of lots of games before it, is using Kickstarter as a way to get free money and healthy dose of free marketing. And it's very hard to deny that the mentality people have with Kickstarter is not so much one of patronage as one of preordering stuff if not the same kind of blind consumerism that drives Steam sales.
I know it's pretty much raining of the parade but to Caesar that which is Caesar's and so on.

Nah, don't overthink it, I simply missaplied the quote. I meant to say something along the lines of "Yeah, I know there's a lot of good things in this but let's that not be an excuse for the bad" (Or viceversa).Blu wrote:Erik, are we too trusting of the system, cooperating with the state? Interesting use of the quote.
There's a better saying for this but it doesn't come to mind.
I think it's fine, Bogus as long as it's what you want. Not going against this on a personal level, I just think it's a worrysome trend.BogusMeatFactory wrote:That's the thing. For me, I don't care. Honestly, if I was asked to give away my vital organs, my house and sell my wife into the sex industry to get Shenmue 3, I think I would seriously consider it.

Oh haha, I didn't mean to make it seem like I was taking it personally, No worries! I mean, I guess if big name companies are using Kickstarter as a backhanded way to get pre-orders, yeah I see it as an issue. For Shenmue 3 though....I could know that it was getting $300 million from a publisher and I would still give them my $100 to say, "WOOO!!!"Erik_Twice wrote: I think it's fine, Bogus as long as it's what you want. Re: Shenmue 3 Kickstarter
I think it's interesting and we've had the same type of discussion in a kickstarter thread somewhere around here. For one, Sony could be monitoring Kickstarter in a way to see if there's enough of a market to project Shenmue 3, or eliminate the possibility of a Shenmue 4. If the kickstarter doesn't get all the stretch goals, etc, Shenmue 3 could be seen as too niche and not appeal to a larger audience. In that sense, they benefit from the fanservice and at the same time put the tired debate to rest and finish Shenmue 3. So I appreciate some transparency on Sony's end, though they could absorb the risks a little better than we can if the project fails, etc. It could be an industry shift if these things continue to gain traction.
What I'm actually curious about, is sales after release. Reading something like Shovel Knight, which sold 150K+ copies in its first month, after you removed the initial backers, that's pretty considerable. Are there other (software) projects out there that have sold very well after it's been released?
I really just enjoy a good story, and I'm willing to pay for one. For all we know, Ryo could fall in love with Shen Hua, and live the simple farmer life. Then one day Lan Di comes along and they discover that the Phoenix and Dragon Mirrors aren't mirrors at all, they're excellent bird baths!
Edit: They better start researching the weather patterns and history for that area of China in the late 1980's. That immersion and attention to detail.

Pillars of Eternity, offhand. Could possibly count Pier Solar, though of course, those of us that backed it at physical copy level have yet to see it...Blu wrote:Are there other (software) projects out there that have sold very well after it's been released?

Ah, yep, sure was.
I, of course, backed Torment: Tides of Numenera, of that round of older-school RPGs...and it hasn't shipped yet either.
I think the only Kickstarter thing I've gotten as of yet is the Frank Cho book.

Re: Shenmue 3 Kickstarter
Divinity OS was one I really wanted to play last year, but never did. Now it's sort of on my "will play it someday when it's on sale for like $5" list. Now I'm more eyeballing Pillars Of Eternity, plus Swordcoasts Legends will be out later this year. Though my interest in Pillars keeps rising, and my expectations of SCL keeps diminishing for some reason.
