I don't know how to properly punctuate phrases. Is this one correct?
"Games matter, news don't"
Using ";" doens't seem appropiate at all and a full stop seems appropiate but odd :/

Technically you do, or you need some kind of conjunction since you have two complete sentences joined by a comma. But we'll get your meaning if you leave it with just a comma.

Rachel Dolezal identifies as African American. Gets brutally slammed by the media.
Bruce Jenner identifies as a Woman. Wins Arthur Ashe Courage Award.
Apparently both lied about their "true" identity, but one is crucified and the other is rewarded. I can't, can't... I can't even formulate a sentence to state how weird this is.

We treat race and ethnicity in an entirely different fashion from gender, sex, and sexuality. But I am curious if this will in any way lead to an exploration of the idea of race and ethnicity.Luke wrote:Rachel Dolezal identifies as African American. Gets brutally slammed by the media.

Why "doesn't"? "News don't matter" is appropiate, right? So why "doesn't"?Ack wrote:"Games matter, news doesn't"
I think I'm going to dig up a style guide and check, it should be easier for my monkey brainTechnically you do, or you need some kind of conjunction since you have two complete sentences joined by a comma. But we'll get your meaning if you leave it with just a comma.
It's not weird, Rachel Dolezal is a fraud, trying to pass herself as something she isn't while Bruce Jenner suffered from gender dysphoria which is a medical condition whose victims have been brutalized for a very long time in history.Luke wrote:Rachel Dolezal identifies as African American. (Note that race as a concept has no scientific validity and men have nipples. One can't be born in the "wrong" race, but one can be born into the wrong sex just like one can be born with any other mutations or illnesses)

Because we treat news as a singular word, despite the -s ending and regardless of whether it is plural.Erik_Twice wrote:Why "doesn't"? "News don't matter" is appropiate, right? So why "doesn't"?Ack wrote:"Games matter, news doesn't"

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
News don't matter is grammatically incorrect. News is always treated as a singular, not a plural. You might hear people say 'news dont matter' I guess, but it would be exceptionally colloquial.Erik_Twice wrote:Why "doesn't"? "News don't matter" is appropiate, right?
