Re: Shenmue 3 Kickstarter
I think Shenmue is one of the four games that would go on to define the modern era along with Half-Life, Deus Ex and Metal Gear Solid.

Re: Shenmue 3 Kickstarter
See that boggles my mind. I get frustrated when people go, "The cat is dumb! Sailors! Forklifts!" Those are mere blips on the radar of the game and people can't seem to get past it. It is like saying, "I hate Mass Effect, because I just can't stand people with Disabilities," referring to Joker, a character in the game who doesn't play a major role in the overall gameplay experience.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:The worst part about not liking Shenmue is hearing people who like Shenmue talk about Shenmue.
It makes me want to go and try to replay it. I know how it turns out though.
I get to the cat, what, 15 minutes in? Shake my head. Turn it off.
Actally, let's take Mass Effect and use it as a great parallel to Shenmue. In Mass Effect, when at the Citadel, you can do tons of menial sidequests that include: Breaking up an argument over religion, dispelling rumors about a diplomat, cheering up a drunk, walking from checkpoint to checkpoint, scanning aliens, signing autographs, doing an interview, sitting in an elevator. Do people hate that game for those reasons?
No. Why? Because there is action in the game? Because of the story? Shenmue has those things. Grumble grumble grumble! Cranky Bogus is cranky!!!!!
I get it if people said, "I'm just not into adventure games." Sure, some people prefer a much heavier action oriented game, or an arcade-style experience over a story driven cinematic experience. That is absolutely fine. Not every game is for everyone. I can't play Real Time Strategy games, because I just don't get it. I stink at it and can't find enjoyment in the game. Are Real Time Strategy games bad? Absolutely not!

I like plenty of games in general the mold of Shenmue, but they don't suck.BogusMeatFactory wrote: I get it if people said, "I'm just not into adventure games." If you can run over those kittens with a forklift in Shenmue III, it's a day one buy.BogusMeatFactory wrote:Dave probably fed his kittens dried tofu, that bastard!Luke wrote:This man hates Lucky Hit, feeding kittens, and forklift racing.dsheinem wrote: I like plenty of games in general the mold of Shenmue, but they don't suck.

Was there anything like Shenmue when it came out? Boggles my mind that it came out a year before GTA 3, was there anything else with a life like world with that much detail, even on PC? I was in 8th grade playing N64 at the time, I don't think I knew anything about this game, we didn't have internet yet and I don't think G4TV was a thing really yet, all my gaming news I was still getting from my Nintendo Power or what I saw in the Blockbuster.

Re: Shenmue 3 Kickstarter
I think what led to me putting the game down was the lack of direction. Very possible that I just wasn't in the right mindset for the game, or that I got used to "Quest Trackers" and the like in more modern adventure games. I feel like I am lost without a cause in between every goal.
Either I am worse at the game than most people, which is entirely likely, or maybe that is part of what people enjoy about it?
I want to give it another go, with less expectations of what I think the game is/should be, and just take it in. I think an oozing post from the meat man about what exactly it is that makes this game so wonderful would be a huge help. Heck, you got me wanting to play point and click games (Buying Grim Fandango very soon in fact!), and I never had an interest in them.
For what its worth, I liked the kitten. I never got to any forklifts, actually was looking forward to seeing what that was all about, but I just talked to like 100 people that seemed irritated at my existence.
