Wow the first game is matching the pal version of 2 (which seems to be the same price it has been for a while).

Yeah, I knew this would happen. I held off buying it at around $20 for a while, and now it's ridiculously priced. Ugh.

Woke up this morning, and realized it wasn't a dream. Realized the money I threw at the project wasn't a dream, either. Adrenaline is a hell of a drug.

I think I might stream the JP DC versions of I & II after finishing Maken X.

The first game is a trend setter; it's the zen of open-world experiences. It also came with some limitations due to the technology of the era. Consider, if you will, the difference in the graphics in Shenmue compared to something like GTA III. Shenmue went for as realistic a world as possible, constructing environments and buildings, inside and out, in ways they never had been before. GTA III went for as large an explorable area as possible, with any concessions necessary to character models/animation, environments, textures, etc; almost two years later, no less. (It's interesting how those two games seemed to have similar goals, but went about them with two, almost opposing, ethos.)

I loved Shenmue when it was released, but it's certainly aged less gracefully than I would have hoped. Shenmue II is, in my opinion, the greatest game of all time, though. It set my world on fire. It's a massive game, with much more detail in everything from the scenery to the characters/story, and everything in between. For some, It still might feel like the game is making you run errands, and do chores, but for anyone who enjoyed Shenmue even a little bit: drop whatever you're doing and play Shenmue II, immediately. I wouldn't even bother replaying the first one. Just watch the recap video.

Confirming what everyone thought, the kickstarter was to gauge interest, Sony is putting up the funds for development.

I am quite familiar with the first Shenmue. I played it when it was first released on a friend's Dreamcast. We were both blown away by the graphics and interactivity of its world back then. It's just the fun factor wasn't there half the time. Actually my favorite part of the game was the hidden basement beneath the dojo, everything about that part of the game worked beautifully. I also tremendously enjoyed the game's atmosphere, I felt like I was in a small backwater Japanese town in the 80s. But all of that is just window dressing if the game's backbone is weak. And by backbone, I mean actual gameplay.

A couple years ago I replayed Shenmue on a Dreamcast hooked up to an LCD HDTV over a VGA cable. The graphics still looked great. The gameplay is still "meh".

But I want to stress one more time, I don't think the first Shenmue is a "bad game", it's just a flawed game. It is though, a very unique and interesting experience that everyone should at least give a try.
Shenmue II is, in my opinion, the greatest game of all time, though.
Now that's the first time I've ever read anyone say that! Yeah I definitely will be breaking out the Xbox this fall for it.

Can we see a Kickstarter for Mega Man Legends 3? Come on Crapcom, I will actually give you real money for this.

Let me be the second. Shenmue II is, in my opinion, the greatest game of all time, though.
