Re: Shenmue 3 Kickstarter
I agree that the first Shenmue is an interesting concept but a very flawed game. I haven't played Shenmue 2 yet, so no opinion there. I'm just glad Shenmue 3 can come out and hopefully provide closure for the story.

I like Shenmue. I also greatly appreciate dish's dissenting opinions. There are plenty of 5th/6th gen sacred cows that I strongly dislike myself. And it's easy to see how someone could dislike Shenmue.
Yu Suzuki developed some decent games, but nothing of his has ever floored me completely.

Shenmue 2 plays exactly like Shenmue in terms of controls, but has more content, larger areas and a faster paced story. The game is like 10x the size of the original Shenmue and there is just so much to see that you just can't do it in one sitting.Exhuminator wrote:I agree that the first Shenmue is an interesting concept but a very flawed game. I agree that Shenmue is not perfect and has tons of flaws to it, but those flaws are not game breaking for me. Instead, I see the attention to detail and am in love with the world they crafted. I look past the cheesy voice acting and frustrating dreamcast controls and see the character that is oozing from the game.

Question Bogus, is there a time limit playing this game? I see that days are going by but if I go too slowly does the story change? Can Ryo die of old age if I take my sweet time?

The cheesy voice acting actually works in its favor for the main characters I think. Ryo and Nozomi, intentional or not, just sound so sad. I don't know why but it works. The world just seems legitimate, even more so than much bigger games that have come after it. The sound is the most overlooked thing about the game too. The soundtrack and ambience was amazing for its time.BogusMeatFactory wrote:Exhuminator wrote: I agree that Shenmue is not perfect and has tons of flaws to it, but those flaws are not game breaking for me. The game is definitely greater than the sum of its parts to the people that like it. It was just something else at the time.

There is a time limit, yes, but unless you do something incredibly stupid, you won't reach that time limit. It is the, "bad ending," and the only way to really get it is if you literally spend tens of hours messing around or, leave the game running during a certain scene. It is worth seeing at some point.ninjainspandex wrote:Question Bogus, is there a time limit playing this game? I see that days are going by but if I go too slowly does the story change? Also, side question for those that played Shenmue.

Shenmue II sounds a lot better than Shenmue. Maybe I should dust off that ol' Xbox copy I've had for years and years finally.

Honestly I think they're about the same, with Shenmue II having more "why the fuck are you making me do this" parts. Enjoyed the first one more for sure.Exhuminator wrote:Shenmue II sounds a lot better than Shenmue. Maybe I should dust off that ol' Xbox copy I've had for years and years finally.

You should play them one after the other. If you don't want to fumble through Shenmue, use the awesome guide that literally tells you when and where all the little events are so you can get a very full experience. Shenmue II though....good luck finding everything. That takes time and the only reason why we know we have found everything is that people have literally ripped the game apart to find stuff.Exhuminator wrote:Shenmue II sounds a lot better than Shenmue. Did you know that in Shenmue II's code there are locations and characters that would have followed the ending, but was scrapped to be put in the third game?
@Snatch
No way is Shenmue better than II! You are crazy! There is so much more going on and the game has so many secrets and side activities.
spoilers here.
