Rental labels, price stickers, kids' names in Sharpie... within reason, I think it's neat when there's something there that preserves the item's provenance. I like that connection to its past.
I agree one hundred percent! I absolutely adore the mystique of games played by others in the past. It always pained me as a kid to take a game I rented from the library and see that all the saved game slots are taken in the game and I had to delete one. Why did they name their characters that way? What do their game notes in the manual mean? These things just add a level of character to an old game for me and I think it is so interesting!

It said something like "To Ben, I love you my sweet boyfriend! Love Jennifer" on it. It made me sad because what if this was a game Ben's girlfriend bought him, and they broke up, so now he sold the game because it reminds him of his ex? I mean if it was actually a gift from his girlfriend why would he sell it otherwise? It was a melancholy moment for me.
I know, because Shenmue II is absolutely amazing! Maybe he was depressed seeing this game and knowing we will never see an end and he and Jennifer got married? It could happen!

I would rather have my games in the best condition I can, seeing marks on a game or a book just makes me sad.

The worst are stickers on CD games. I'm talking, on the front of the actual CD. WHYYYYYY

I'm not really into the stickers and stuff usually, other than an NES I bought at a thrift store. It had a couple old stickers, probably from Nintendo Power, of Mario and another of Samus. I kept them on there.

Otherwise, I like finding receipts in them just to see when and for how much it was purchased back when. That's about it though.

I hate stickers and markings and whatnot from other people on my games. I never did it, so I feel now that their shit is infesting my otherwise in-good-condition collection.

Speaking of saved games, I left a note with the game at the rental store for someone to not delete my slot in Dragon Warrior III. It... didn't work.

I eventually ended up owning that particular copy of the game anyway, so all is well. :)

Quick story, my younger brother once traded in his copy of Sonic & Knuckles to our local game store. Another sibling ended up buying a copy of S&K from that same store like 6 months later... it was the same copy, all saves intact. Using the game store as a pawn shop, not the best financial strategy ever but it can work I guess.

Ha, that's how things work out, isn't it?

I bought so many great games from this video store. I'd bug them all the time about buying stuff that wasn't renting well. I did the same thing at Blockbuster while it was open, and scored some great stuff there as well. I almost never actually rented anything there, though!

Another good interview on Gamasutra I found today, this one goes out to all the Blue Stinger/Illbleed (DC) fans! It also puts to rest a nagging thought I had about the Jaleco/AIA publisher situation with Illbleed.
