1) Do you have problems focusing enough on a game to beat it?
Sometimes, if a game is too difficult, I'll throw up my hands and concede defeat. Also, I get frustrated rather quickly, so I won't put as many tries as I should. But, for long term, not really. I'm stubborn and will not stop playing a game. Only on the rare occasions of me really hating it do I stop playing.

2) Other than losing interest, is there any recurring reason why you abandon games?
If the game is just bad, I won't continue playing. If I don't like it, I'll stop it. I've lost the point of playing bad games just because I own it or I have to.

3) Conversely, is there something that makes you far more likely to beat a game?
If I like a game, I'll spend more time than necessary to beat it. And certain genres like RPG's will make me want to play it more than others.

4) Do you finish bad games or games you are not enjoying too much?
No. If the game is bad and I am not enjoying myself, I trade it in for another game.

5) Have you ever tried to beat a whole series? Which one? Did you succeed?
Kind of... I have beaten Final Fantasy I - XII, skipping over XI and replacing it with X-2. I have done that twice and once in a calendar year. I have beaten Suikoden I - V. Other smaller series and I'm in the middle of many other series as well.

Bonus X) What's the game that required more effort from you to beat?
Some Strategy RPG's required hundreds of hours for me to beat like the Disgaea's, Phantom Brave and others. I bashed my head in for several hours, but I finally did beat the original Castlevania.

Bonus Y) What game you would really love to beat but won't for the foreseeable future?
Castlevania III - It takes forever to make one level of progress in that game.
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! - Sandman and Macho Man together.

Bonux Z) Aren't you ashamed when you open your Steam library? Shaaaame
Not at all. I don't have a Steam account.

About the earlier debate concerning having time to play games as an adult...
I wrote something about that once:

My answers:

1) Do you have problems focusing enough on a game to beat it?

Nope, not if it's actually good. Though, I can sometimes find myself interested in multiple games at a time, in which case, each game is getting in the way of me beating the other. In those times, a certain game might just fall by the wayside and I end up forgetting about it.

2) Other than losing interest, is there any recurring reason why you abandon games?

If they annoy or frustrate me, or I just find them boring. Generally, if a game hits on some of my pet peeves, or just delivers an experience that feels very generic and similar to many other games, then I might abandon it. I need a game to be fun (i.e. not frustrating) and inspired (i.e. it's trying to do something special or different)

3) Conversely, is there something that makes you far more likely to beat a game?

I do actually find myself favoring games that are linear, shorter in length and don't have fifty billion, pointless side quests. I enjoy a game that is respectful of my time. And I tend to appreciate games these days that are not overly complicated. A lot of digital PSN/XBLA games are enticing to me because it's easier to find time for them and they are easy to pick up and play so I don't have to invest a lot of time just figuring out how to do shit. Also, I favor beat 'em ups, platformers and the occasional Japanese rpg. So I'm more likely to finish games in those genres.

4) Do you finish bad games or games you are not enjoying too much?
If there is something really intriguing about them, yes...sometimes. Also, some of my favorite games are considered bad by a lot of people, or just simply ignored entirely (my hidden gems)

5) Have you ever tried to beat a whole series? Which one? Did you succeed?

I've been consistent in beating Final Fantasy games since my first one (FF III American on the SNES), except the pointless MMORPG ones. I've beaten every Mega Man X game, both Dino Crisis games, all the Sly Cooper games, and probably some other series I'm not thinking of at the moment.

Bonus X) What's the game that required more effort from you to beat?

Shinobi on PS2, although it wasn't enough to beat it. I had to unlock everything, get the highest rank on each stage, etc. That was hard as fuck

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the NES was pretty rough too. There are plenty others I'm sure but those are the first two to pop into my head. OH! Also MDK 2 on the Dreamcast. Hard as fuck for me.

Bonus Y) What game you would really love to beat but won't for the foreseeable future?

I've been putting Final Fantasy Type 0 on hold, because I'm planning on sinking hours into Arkham Knight when it comes out soon. I also keep wanting to get the Platinum trophy for Deception IV and they've just announced an enhanced version of it like a month or two from now. Seems I'll be more likely to start playing that, then finish the original.

Bonux Z) Aren't you ashamed when you open your Steam library? Shaaaame

I don't PC game very often, and I've already given up on playing the mountains of games I've gotten on Steam from holiday sales or as gifts from other players. Hell, I have a backlog on just about every console that drives me nuts enough as it is, no time to worry about my PC backlog.

Ever since I've developed my shelving system I've mentioned over the board to reflect what I've beaten and have not (divider in between the two, left side are beaten games from A-Z, right side are backlog/untouched/unbeaten games from A-Z), I have gotten way better at finishing games. But in general, I hate not beating a game. This, RB's Games Beaten threads, and stuff like backloggery have helped me see the fruits of my labor even more. It's fulfilling. There's a reason why I don't like MMO's. I like my games to have a beginning, middle, and an end. Completing them is part of the hobby for sure.

1) Do you have problems focusing enough on a game to beat it?
Not really, but I like to rotate a few games at a time like some others do, usually just 2-3. This is often also because I'm constantly playing both old and new stuff.

2) Other than losing interest, is there any recurring reason why you abandon games?
Nothing else really comes to mind, because 4) touches upon the only possible issue. I do have a soft limit for longer games though, usually at around 70 hours into some of those massive RPG's, my patience becomes very tested. Skyrim was one I stopped playing around this point, and did not pickup again until 2 years later to wrap it up. More recently, Dragon Age Inquisition was another big one...at around this point, despite loving the game, the "okay it's time to wrap this up" mood finally hit me. But there can be exceptions. I just got done putting 105 hours into Dark Souls 2 on the PS4.

3) Conversely, is there something that makes you far more likely to beat a game?
Games I like? Hard to say, I've become more selective over the last few years again. Really I think if you just stick with your intuition, you kind of know if you'll enjoy a game or not. So thesedays I only buy a few new releases a year, then pickup other stuff I am interested in and have looked into enough to get a feel for.

4) Do you finish bad games or games you are not enjoying too much?
Hate to admit, yes. So much of a completionist that I sometimes have to see them through to the end. I hate not beating something, but it kind of helps to write these games down as well as "dropped" to finally settle with not wanting to put up with more. I've only started doing this since 2013 though. Here's the short list of stuff I played, more than a few hours into, but was either too bored or frustrated to continue:

2013
1. Genji Dawn of the Samurai (PS2)
2. Onimusha Dawn of Dreams (PS2)

2014
1. Kirby's Amazing Mirror (GBA)
2. Lightning Returns (PS3)
3. Lost Planet 3 (PS3)

I think for me to say I've officially played a game, I need to put a few hours into it, or a few levels (if we're talking old NES stuff or something). Otherwise, if I only play for an hour or less I kind of see that as sampling. Sometimes I do that and if the mood isn't right for the game, I just put it back on the shelf for later.

5) Have you ever tried to beat a whole series? Which one? Did you succeed?
I definitely like to sometimes. The one I'm most proud of would be Final Fantasy, 1-10 at least. Although it's not the original versions in some cases, I think it's legit enough to proudly say I've beaten 1-10 in some form.
FF1 - PSX/GBA
FF2 - PSP
FF3 - NES (emu)
FF4 - SNES/PSX/PSP
FF5 - GBA
FF6 - SNES/PSX
FF7-FF10 - PSX/PS2

Also this year, I went through all of the traditional Castlevania's, except for 2. I kind of want to beat that one just to say I've beaten them all. 1-4, Chronicles, Rondo of Blood, Rebirth, Bloodlines.

In 2013-2014 I finally ventured through all of Silent Hill.

Megaman 1-10, Megaman & Bass, X-X6, Zero 1-4. etc

Bonus X) What's the game that required more effort from you to beat?

Bonus Y) What game you would really love to beat but won't for the foreseeable future?
Any of the Tales games. I've played through a chunk of a lot of them, but never beat them. The thin stories dwindle after awhile so I lose interest on what the goal should be I guess.

Jurassic Park on the SNES
is one that has haunted me to this day. I rented it a lot, I owned it growing up off and on, I have never been able to finish this one because of the crazy mazes and lack of saving. It's such a strange game. I dig it though.

Bonux Z) Aren't you ashamed when you open your Steam library? Shaaaame
I don't open it too often... always going to be more of a console/physical media guy. I can't help but see and value physical and digital completely different.

I'm not a believer in "the backlog" that many psych themselves up about, since my collection is there for me to enjoy at my leisure and not for me to stress over. So "beating" games isn't as high a priority for me as it might be for some people.

1) Do you have problems focusing enough on a game to beat it?

It ultimately comes down to how much the game is engaging me. I do think that yes, I largely have problems with this and I think a lot of it has to do with my current mood.

Sometimes I'll drop a game half-way through only to go back to it years later, start over and have a much better time with it to the point where I can hardly put it down. Sometimes no matter how many times I try, particular games never click with me long enough to beat them even if I don't necessarily dislike them.

2) Other than losing interest, is there any recurring reason why you abandon games?

Length. Unless a game completely immerses me I don't often make it past 20 hours. Maybe that's the same thing as losing interest. Regardless I end up not playing many RPGs and most games that aren't action oriented will lose me quickly. There are of course exceptions to this rule with RPGs, adventure games and even turn based strategy games that I adore.

Frustration is a factor depending on genre and situation. If I know I can do something and it's my fault then I'll try, try again. If I feel the game is cheating me in some way or I know a task is simply insurmountable for me in a genre I'm not very good at then I'll give it up.

3) Conversely, is there something that makes you far more likely to beat a game?

Again genre and length is the major factor here, with my level of immersion causing exceptions.

If a game manages to immerse me into its world or its concepts I probably won't let it go until it's beaten.

4) Do you finish bad games or games you are not enjoying too much?

Not usually, but if the game is short enough like Ghostbusters on the Sega Master System. I think this happened more when I was a kid and only had a small selection of NES and Genesis games to play before we got a PC. I slogged all the way through Batman Forever on the Genesis for instance.

Now there's too many games for me to play to waste time not enjoying myself. I'll give games a chance to grow on me but I'm not going to keep playing if they don't.

5) Have you ever tried to beat a whole series? Which one? Did you succeed?

A few. Mega Man, Wing Commander, MechWarrior off the top of my head. Probably a few examples that were complete series at the time that got sequels I never bothered with so they don't count anymore. If I really love a series I'll try to beat every game in it but I'm not going to kick myself if there's one I just can't finish for whatever reason.

Bonus X) What's the game that required more effort from you to beat?

Usually stuff like shumps. I love them but I'm not very good at them.

Bonus Y) What game you would really love to beat but won't for the foreseeable future?

I'd really like to finish off the Metroid series but I could just never get through Prime 2, don't feel like moving on to Prime 3 without beating Prime 2 and Other M just infuriated me in every conceivable way in the short time I spent with it.

How much I give a crap about this has lessened over time.

Bonux Z) Aren't you ashamed when you open your Steam library? Shaaaame

Nah, I don't have much of a Steam library. That might change when I get a new computer since I'm planning to skip the consoles this generation.

1) Do you have problems focusing enough on a game to beat it?

Very rarely. There are a couple that slip through the net each year, but I generally come back and beat them. Most often if I lose focus, it just takes me longer to beat them, rather than me not finishing.

2) Other than losing interest, is there any recurring reason why you abandon games?

Getting caught up playing other games is the most likely reason, but I'm pretty good now about finishing what I start and this doesn't happen too often.

3) Conversely, is there something that makes you far more likely to beat a game?

If I'm in the right mood, I can just get so involved in a game I can sit and play it for hours. I have no way to know when I'm in that mood, it just happens. Sometimes I can love a game and be bored after an hour, other times I sit down not expecting to play long and 12 hours later feel sad that I need to go to bed.

4) Do you finish bad games or games you are not enjoying too much?

Yes. Most games I outright hate I get rid of, and there are very few games like this. There are more than a few games I've finished that I didn't enjoy or found to be flawed though.

5) Have you ever tried to beat a whole series? Which one? Did you succeed?

I've never actively tried to beat a whole series as a goal, but I have managed it a few times, for example I've finished all the main Wonder Boy, Zelda and Pokémon games. I quite often try to complete series in terms of ownership though, so this kind of ties in. I want to have all the Metroid or Kirby games because I enjoy them, so I'll likely eventually finish those series too. Same goes for Fire Emblem, where I've recently acquired the majority of the games I was missing. 3 more to acquire!

Bonus X) What's the game that required more effort from you to beat?

In terms of difficulty, Ecco the Dolphin was by far the hardest game I've ever finished. Ninja Gaiden and Punch-Out!! are jokes in comparison.

In terms of willpower, finish Back to the Future III on Mega Drive or TMNT on NES were pretty torturous to play through. Beating them both was a matter of pride though!

Bonus Y) What game you would really love to beat but won't for the foreseeable future?

Most of my RPG and Shmup collection because I buy too many games and finding time for these ones is tricky. I'll definitely beat games in these genres, but I have more than I am likely to play any time soon.

Bonux Z) Aren't you ashamed when you open your Steam library? Shaaaame

I have 3 games on Steam, and I didn't pay for any of them. They are Portal, Portal 2 and Team Fortress. I am yet to play any of them.

I suppose this is a good time to mention that I find myself focusing specifically on particular hardware. Like I have been putting off playing much of my collection because my focus these days is strictly SNES and PC. At this point, that is all I collect as well, and the rate of collecting for my SNES has slowed a fair bit. There is a combination of reasons for this, from space concerns to money to my evolving views on having a collection in general. I've even mentally toyed with selling off parts of it that just no longer interest me.

Also, I discovered Backloggery.com in 2009 and have been using it regularly since then. It has been a huge help, and I can say I have beaten over 500 games in my collection. I'm also in the Top 10 lists for most completed SNES and GOG games over there. That has given a competitive aspect to my beating and completing games.

You should toss the shovelware and games you don't like/don't want to play even if they're critically acclaimed. Shovelware was the first to go for me, and I was proud for having no bad games. Next went the games I just didn't want to play/didn't like, regardless of their stature. A smaller library of games I like is better than a larger, mixed-bag collection of games.

Yeah... I could honestly do without 80% of my 360 collection or something. That was around the time I was doing Gamefly for a bit, couldn't help but "keep it" for almost every rental and was way too into the AAA craze early on that gen. Since then is when I've realized it's better to be more selective about your choices, not in a limiting way, but there's just tons of games out there I know I don't need to bother with. The 360 library I built up is a specific target, because there's just no way I'll care to replay most of the games I have for it.
