Castlevania Appreciation Thread

It's a bit like asking me what my favorite Zelda is, honestly.

What's your favorite Zelda?

Actually, Link's Awakening, followed by A Link to the Past. Sometimes those flip-flop depending on how I'm feeling.

Alright so I downloaded Rondo of Blood. Pretty snazzy! Gorgeous graphics. Am I just an idiot though, or is that huge opening intro unskippable? Or is this just because it was my first time playing the game? In any event, playing this made me long for more Castlevania so I finally purchased a copy of part III on NES.

So on deck I have III, IV, Rondo, and the N64 game. I don't want to get more modern than that and I have beaten I, II, and Symphony. Any others I should check out? Genesis? Game Boy?

I don't know man, I hear some of GBA ones bandied about as good stuff, so you may be doing yourself a disservice by limiting to <N64.

Bloodlines on the Genesis is pretty solid, so I'd recommend you pick that up to finish up your selection of Classicvanias. If you liked SotN then I highly recommend the GBA and DS titles (though I realize you shy away from anything that can't drink yet). The GB titles are definitely on the weaker end. I'd say watch a Let's Play of them and see if it looks fun to you or not.

Wow, where have you been!? And what do you even mean by more modern? lol, Castlevania's been dead forever dude. The 3D ones pretty much all suck but there's dozens of 2D installments that rule.

Get:
All 6 handheld GBA/DS Metroidvania's, my favorites are Circle, Aria, and Order of Eclessia
Bloodlines, incredible.
Chronicles, everyone skips this one but it's awesome. PSX remake of 1 or something.
Castlevania Rebirth (Wiiware), this one is pretty tough.

Those along with Symphony and Rondo are all amazing. Emulate or get Dracula X on Wii U VC since the cart is overly priced, it's not great. Worth checking out to see how hilariously bad the level designs are, it has a huge emphasis on platforming unlike the others. You even have to fight Dracula on a dozen of pillars basically with death pits in between.

I like the 16bit games way more than the NES ones.

Oh man I forgot about the GBA and DS games! I actually do own Circle of the Moon, but no others. Maybe I'll try to track some of these down, the prices of the DS ones aren't terrible.

Hell yeah. Your mileage will vary on the GBA/DS ones, but they are all top notch with the exception of Harmony of Dissonance being so-so. Circle of the Moon stands out to me a lot because it looks unique, kind of like what a CV Metroidvania would have been like on the SNES or Genesis. The rest of the games look like they just copy and paste from Symphony. Not that that's bad, but yeah.

At least the indie scene is carrying the torch. I would say Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight feels like the closest thing to classic Castlevania out there right now.
