This whole discussion about what is/isn't part of the so-called "main series" seems pretty silly because it's all arbitrary.
The comment quoted above pretty much describes 3D World though: a platformer that brings out the best in the console, is a critical hit, and deserves to be a system seller. However, it's not a fully 3D world in the same sense as Galaxy or Sunshine or Mario 64... my guess is that you want that style of gameplay?
My guess: outside of Mario Maker (which seems pretty awesome for anyone who enjoys 2D platforming) I'd guess that we are unlikely to see another major Mario release on Wii U unless there is a remake of an older release. That's just a wild guess though.

I hope both are right. I hope we get another major Mario release (a successor to Galaxy) as well as a remake of an older release (HD Sunshine would be AWESOME).
I am not arguing what "main series" are , only expressing my opinion what I consider is part of it. If Nintendo considers 3D World as the major Mario release for the Wii U, then so be it. I just thought there is a new 3D Mario platformer in the making.
I don't think it's flawed logic to consider 3D World part of the main series, and I also don't think it's flawed to assume another game may be coming. The Wii had two, after all.
At the same time, with Nintendo beginning to shift focus to a new console, I imagine the desire for new 'killer' apps on Wii U is slowly waning, but E3 may surprise us. We still have Star Fox and Zelda coming after all.
Collects promo gaming stuff, certain import games, hockey memorabilia, and other oddball things. (sig and avy under construction)

Has Nintendo said NX is a successor to Wii U at any point? People are jumping to conclusions on that one I think.

Judging from all the clues they have thrown out, concesus seems to be that NX will be a platform ala iOS or Android and it will run on both their handheld and console.
Mind you that means they can release the handheld first and the console a year later, but I think it would make more sense to release them together, even though nintendo probably doesn't have the funds for it.
