Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

What are you favorite browser extensions / plugins ?

Post by Ziggy »

I found a neat extension today for Chrome, so I decided to make this thread. :D

I use Fire Fox at home, but all the computers at work have Chrome on it. I don't mind Chrome at all, but there's a few things I don't like.

I don't like how you can't change the new tab page. I know you can change the homepage, but every time you open a new tab it opens the Google search bar with thumbnails of your 6 most visited sites. I don't like Racketboy and whatnot showing up at work for obvious reasons lol. So I looked for something really simple. For a while I was using "Empty New Tab Page" that would just open a blank white tab, but then I found something really cool.

Earth View From Google Maps: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... nfo-dialog

When you open a new tab, this extension displays a satellite image from Google Maps. I found it to be a little pleasant something that I can enjoy throughout the work day.

One reason why I use Fire Fox at home over Chrome might seem a little silly, but it's very important to me. Ctrl+B opens the bookmark pane and puts the cursor in the search box. I know I can just get to the bookmarks from the menu, but that really screws up my workflow when I'm in the middle of something.

Open Bookmark Manager: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... nfo-dialog

IMO, you really shouldn't need to install an extension for this. You should be able to do this out of the box. This extension gives you a little button you can click to get to the bookmark manager (which I don't really care about) but most importantly enables a keyboard shortcut. So now I can hit Ctrl+B to open the bookmark manager and have the cursor automatically jump to the search box, just like in Fire Fox.

edit: For Fire Fox, my favorite extension has to be Speed Dial. I've been using it for years. My homepage and new tabs open speed dial, and I set my most frequently visited sites there. It's static, so they never change (unless I manually change them, of course). I especially like that the thumbnail view refreshes itself often (you can set how often). So certain sites I like to visit I can see when the homepage is updated with new content without actually having to visit the site.

So what are your favorite browser extensions and plugins?

For Chrome (the only browser I use until Vivaldi is launched):

eHistory

I've been using eHistory for so long I have forgotten what Chrome's actual history manager looks like. All I remember, though, was that I absolutely despised it. With eHistory, you can search your history better and, more importantly, remove all instances of that search. I find it handy for keeping a clean history so I don't have to wade through junk to find that important article. Just got done looking through four dozen Imgur pictures? Erase them all in one swipe. Love it.

Personal Blocklist

Remove spam and shit sites from Google! For a while, when searching for one particular thing, I kept getting a lot of Facebook hits. I don't have Facebook. I never want to be on Facebook again. And whatever it was on Facebook kept polluting my searches. The problem with using -keyword, though, is that you never know when a random site has that word on it. I didn't want to nix the word, I wanted to nix the whole site! You can do that with Personal Blocklist. No more shitty HuffPo articles when you'r searching for news! No more MySpace, Twitter, Google+ when searching for someone.

This also came in handy when trying to find my own website through Google search (to see what it looks like when it is searched), whose name was similar to another's. That website took over the majority of the pages, so to quickly see which pages were trending, I just removed that site from clogging up the searches. Recommended.

Quick Javascript Switcher

Explains itself. This is another crime against users. Every browser should have a quick way to turn off undesirable content, whether its Javascript, Java, Flash, etc.

uBlock Origin

Better than AdBlock, and leaves a smaller footprint, too!

I've been doing Firefox extensions forever. ABP & NoScript are standard equipment.

Also try:

Ghostery - blocks a lot of those hidden social/ad/tracker elements you don't even know are on many pages. Also helps to load pages a little faster. Easily configurable too.

Disconnect - does the same thing, but a little differently. I like to use this and Ghostery together.

Classic Theme Restorer - if you don't like the post FF 29 theme.

Online Convert - a simple right click will convert documents/pictures/music/media to a format you prefer.

Status-4-Evar - if you miss the old school browser status bar like me.

YouTube HD - automatically plays video in HD on YouTube. Super useful.

Download Statusbar - if you want to actually see the progress of downloads rather than have that tiny arrow at the top of the screen.
