I've been playing around with a couple of those portable system screens and was wondering what everyone thought of what is/was available.
Reasons for my interest:
-There were several available, with varying quality
-They tend to be the standard 4:3 dimensions for what was played at the time.
-You don't have to worry about controller lag as much (I might be assuming too much, but they seem to be designed for SD inputs).
-It's neat to have an original, self contained system, paired with a soft-mod and an HDD.
So far, I have tried a few:
The Hip Gear screen/controller for PS2 (or PS1, also produced for XBOX and GC).
Like this:

Was very disappointed i the controller quality, but not sure what I was expecting with that tiny screen. The pixels seemed a bit grainy to me though.
The Zenith 5" Screen for Xbox (also for PS2)
Like this:

This one is decent enough. Not amazingly sharp, but looks nice enough. The ability to swivel it to a variety of angles is a nice feature. Paired with a modded Xbox and it makes for a nice emulation center.
The Intec 5 1/2" (either 5.4" or 5.6") Screen for PS2
Sort of like this:

I was pretty disappointed in this one as the resolution is pretty bad. I hear there is a 5" version that is much better, but don't know how to tell the difference from a picture. You can hook up any other device to it via A/V or S-video, but it all looks terrible (really, why even put an S-video port is it's going to look like crap anyways)?.
And then there are the PSone screens: I have the official one and it does the job well enough.
I'd be interested to hear what others have to say on various dedicated game screens. I'd also like to hear if anyone knows of a nice quality one for PS2 (preferably for the old phat style, but info on good slim screens are welcome too).

Joytec PS2 slim portable screen. Best screen I've ever used for the platform. Good enough to be official imo.

For game playing, any of the portable screen mounted on a console is just too small. You have to sit close with the console in front of you at eye level; usually the table it sits on is too low. Maybe on a kitchen table or the desk, but then that kinda limits where to play the console games.
My PSOne (smaller white model) works well as a "laptop" transportable, the console is smaller and is great for kicking back on the couch or car (12 volt adapter) with console right on lap. The PS2 would be too bulky for this, the slim could possibly work. Oh and the smaller screen of the PSOne "tightens" up the pixels giving a sense of higher resolution.
I really do not get the misinterpretation of controller lag. Th real lag is in the redraw refresh rate of the TV screen itself such as the upscale of a LCD. The console itself does not have controller lag, even when using adapters for different controllers. The electronics inside are by far much faster then the press of a button.
Your last statement above is mainly what I use my small screen on top of the PS2 for. Simply to monitor a HDAdvance hard drive install or doing various utilities while having the TV on something else.
One cool thing in loading a PAL game to get to the 60hz NTSC selection screen is that the portable screen does not roll the image like my HD CRT. The tiny LCD NTSC displays the PAL image in black and white; enough to see the 60hz selector to switch to NTSC (back to full color) mode. The game saves the setting so next go around defaults in NTSC! Not all PAL PS2 games have a 60hz option, but many do.

Make no mistake, I am blaming newer screens for lag, not the system.
I will admit that I am still learning though.
Oh, I forgot to mention, about that intec screen: the refresh rate is terrible! As in every moving object has a shadow trail. Good to know that lag, in theory, should be nonexistent at least.
