I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 429 headphones that I think provides both excellent and great comfort while being super-affordable. My only issue with the pair is that the cord is too long for my using them with my PC or Discman.

Regardless on model, I think Sennheiser is the brand to go with for your non-workout pair.

Agreed on the sennheiser. They sould great without an inline amplifier, so they work great without using your home stereo but some models are built to sound much better if your soundcard or home stereo can push out more.

For mobile sound I got a set of Plantronics BackBeat 903+ bluetooth stereo earbuds. No matter which wired ones I've tried I couldn't get rid of the noise of the cord and these have an incredible battery life. They're pretty easy to fit to be comfortable and keep a seal on my oddly shaped inner ear. I've kep them going for over 10 hours, and I've been told that their mic is better than my phobe's mike especially when it's windy.

Are all good wireless earbuds going to be $60+? 8bit's suggestion is more expensive than the Sennheisers recommended here, though those Motorolas are only $30.

I bought a pair of these a couple years ago, and while they're kick ass earbuds, they were much too tight and caused me pain behind my temples. Due to this, I had to return an otherwise lovely pair of earbuds. :(
