Maniac Mansion

Post by Unleaded Logic »

Anyone else love this classic NES game? Of course it came out on PC first, but my first experience with it was on the NES. I rented it once and loved it and a few months later when I went to the video store to rent it again I was told that someone stole it. I wanted to play it again so bad, I begged and begged for it for my 11th (?) birthday and my parents thankfully found it somewhere.

Great game though, pulled it out of my NES collection and I'm playing as I type this.

Now thats talent. I cant type and play a game at the same time :D

As for the game, Maniac Mansion and Zac Mckracken got me into gaming. My best friend's father would have been the Original Hardcore gamer. Back in the 80's he bought every system and pirated pc games from other guys at work - they worked in a software company making financial stuff.
I would stay the night at my friends house and we would watch him play those games for hours and we all would try to problem solve while he played. My friend and I also would try to remember what his father did and started our own game using different Maniac Mansion characters not realizing each kid had a different way to solve puzzles, it boggled our young minds.
He passed away from a brain tumor when I was in High School back in 91 and to this day I give him credit for every moment of joy I receive playing games, especially adventure games.

Aggghhh...totally messed up, I pulled the water valve and purple tentacle thought it was the power switch. So he flipped it and I had no one close enough to turn it back on...

That or I glitched the game some how...so close to beating it too..

Thats too bad about your friend, but it least his memory will live on in your heart and with gaming. Its always good to have fond memories of your surroundings when you dig out at a classic game. My sister loved this game too and it was one of the ones she actually sat down with me to help me figure out. Dragon Warrior was another one, we played that one for years.

In fact, we were so stuck in Dragon Warrior that I wrote Nintendo Power Game Pros a letter on what we couldn't find, and imagine to my surprise that they wrote back to me with what to do! I wish I would of kept that stuff!

Oh man, I LOVED this game when I was a kid. The fact that everyone had different talents, and there were different ways to solve each puzzle blew me away. Ah, memories.
Comics, RPG's, miniatures, and now retrogaming? I guess its time to learn to go without eating...

I appreciate the NES version has nostalgia value for you, but you should really check out Maniac Mansion Deluxe:

Same as the original PC version but with redone graphics and sound, with music taken from Day Of The Tentacle and mixed in. It also streamlines the interface to match DOTT's, so no more 'what is' command or other such annoyances.

These days, with Maniac Mansion being an eyesore and bloody unintuitive, I find this the only painless way to play.
