their old return policy was way strict though. Like, you couldn't return a game that you had already installed. Which... certainly didn't help if you installed a game and found out your machine couldn't run it. They went from very strict policy to very liberal policy out of nowhere.

That's why I said there's too many cooks in that kitchen.

GOG has a 30 day guarantee, so they decided to do something similar.

if I recall, GOG's 30 day guarantee is that the game will run on your hardware. And if it doesn't (and I believe they have techs to try to help you get it to run) they will refund you. Steam's new policy is "if it's less than 2 weeks, and less than 2 hrs played, you can get a refund - no questions asked." It's (to me) a shockingly liberal new policy.

I know the digital ownership thing is beaten to death on this forum. And obviously I embrace digital media. That said, what I'd truly love to see in the future is the right to transfer ownership of a license. Meaning, the same way we sell/trade our used physical games, I'd think it ideal to be able to sell/trade Steam keys/etc of games you don't want anymore.

I only bring this up, because I think that these sorts of return policies are a possible step in that direction - the recognition that maybe buying a digital key doesn't have to be so final.

So I saw a Republic of Gamers desktop for the first time at Best Buy the other day. I gotta say... I kinda want one now.

I welcome Steam attempts to respect a very small parts of the rights they are obligated to follow but I would welcome Strasbourg forcing them to comply with them all even more.

A minority opinion because many members of the press and independent designers have already shown their opposition to the measure. :?

Truthfully, more DEMOS would help a ton with games. I have gotten some really crap games in the past that would have never made its way into my wallet had a tried a demo.

I'm all for these digital return policies. GOG's is different, but it's good to see them and Steam offer protection that you'd normally get from a physical item.
