Or they're just showing off some new features they think will appeal to their new fanbase and the core gameplay will largely be the same?

The castle thing looks cool imo. I can pass on Fire Emblem-amie. We'll see how the game holds up I guess.

Nintendo is skewing the series towards a different demographic than its original one. I can't blame them insofar as they are company trying to make maximum profit. But the sweeping changes I've seen are disingenuous to the franchise and disrespectful towards long time fans. That said, there's plenty of older games in the series for long time fans to replay.

The My Castle thing seems cool potentially. Maybe it's as simple as they've added a base-building feature and the baths are just an extremely Japanese version of the barracks conversations from Awakening.

As for the different versions in Japan, there's three including the special edition not four. The downloadable version just makes you pick which one you bought when the story requires it, as opposed to the moment you get rung up in the store.

Obviously Fire Emblem is popular in the states but how popular is it? I can't see them splitting this onto two different games physically. Pokémon is a whole different animal (pun?). I see the white physical version with the black campaign as DLC along with the other DLC campaign.

new Steam policy says that you can get a refund on any game you buy for ANY REASON:
The updated policy applies not just to games, but also DLC, in-game purchases, pre-purchases, bundles, and even funds added to your Steam Wallet. The only conditions, generally speaking, is that the refund request must be made within two weeks of the original purchase, and the content in question must have less than two hours of playtime. And if you happen to fall outside of those conditions, it's not necessarily the end of the story: "You can ask for a refund anyway and we'll take a look," Valve wrote.
This is kind of a huge step. Interesting anyway.

They have always had a kind of one time refund policy in the past nice to see that changing especially with the flood of games getting released in Alpha the past few years thanks to greenlight.

I've heard a lot of RTS/4X fans are getting a similar treatment thanks to the popularity of LoL/Dota and RTS companies thinking that if they simplify their games they'll somehow get a similar amount of money - as opposed to, ya know, alienating all of your previous fans and not getting LoL/Dota players because they're too busy playing LoL/Dota.

Fire Emblem is definitely not simplifying. If anything, it's possibly trying to throw too much at the wall to see what sticks.
