I've seen most Hellraiser sequels. None of them come close to the original. The 2nd is overrated in my opinion. But there are some fun ones in there.

The 2nd Candyman is fun as heck. But the original is just brilliant.

I'm a huge huge fan of 'urban legends,' though I'm not a huge fan of the Urban Legends movies. I mean they're fine and all. But nothing special compared to really reading about the real urban legends.

The 3rd, Bloody Mary is low budget but surprisingly good - and a total Candyman knockoff. Even if you could say that part of Candyman came from the Bloody Mary legend.

BTW, me and my friend did the Bloody Mary thing in 6th grade. Well, he did and I watched - horrified. Haha.

I haven't seen It Follows yet, but is high on my list. I've been listening to the soundtrack on Spotify tho.

A History Of Violence (2005)

An ex-mafia man escapes his past and starts a new life far away under an assumed name. Years later his identity is revealed and his past comes back to haunt him. I wouldn't say this was a perfect film, but it was certainly entertaining. Nobody does violence like Cronenberg, and this movie has some extreme bouts of that. Ultimately this film is about accepting who you really are and learning to live with it. Or perhaps it's about never leaving loose ends untied.

I really enjoyed it. It's a slow burn for sure, and it is all about suspense. You also can't pick it apart because they mixed in a classic 80's feel and even style with some modern stuff and there are some plot devices that aren't perfect, but if you can just get in the mood to enjoy the movie for what it is, it's great. Pretty unique and they did great with the budget. The lead actress does an excellent job as well. It is a first day purchase for me when it hits the shelves.

I actually saw Candyman 2 first, back when it was on HBO or Cinemax or something. I prefer the first, but the second was definitely good enough to get me to check out the first, if that makes sense.

I love a lot of slow burners. House Of The Devil and The Innkeepers for instance. Let me know if I haven't told you my Innkeepers story?

I'm just not big on going to the movies. Don't know. Expensive. Kids on cellphones. Ugh. It's like a once or twice a year thing, for a director or series that I've been following for years. Or LiLo. That's about it.

But yeah, when It Follows is out to watch in my home - weekend one.

Today I rewatched Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. I finished rewatching the Twin Peaks TV series yesterday. (And I'm going to spoil parts of the show so if you're planning on watching it for the first time, don't read this post.)

So I'm not sure how controversial this opinion might be, but Fire Walk With Me might be one of David Lynch's best films. It has everything I want in a Lynch movie and I can't think of another film that portrays a teenager's sexual abuse and the ripples throughout her life in a better way. As someone who has not experienced any similar abuse firsthand I can't really know how well this is handled but the dynamics between Laura and her father/BOB are terrifying. In addition to that, there is a fascinating story with supernatural layers being told, exploring the denizens of Twin Peaks' Black Lodge before they appeared in that locale. After seeing the film multiple times, I'm struck by how much more sense it makes. At least compared to something like Inland Empire or Mullholland Dr. the pieces seem to fall into place much more readily.

While the TV show took a fairly sympathetic view of Leland Palmer as not being in control of himself. The movie paints a very different and much darker portrait of the character. It is a dark movie and certainly not a simple one, it is a profound exploration of the darker aspects of life in a seemingly peaceful community. I understand why people didn't like it when it was new, it goes against expectations for a Twin Peaks movie, but it's such a powerful film that it deserves more attention than "the follow-up to a briefly-popular TV show." Fortunately with the new series in the works, I feel like it may find the wider audience it deserves.

FWWM is so brutal and scary. I love it. Not my fav Lynch film, but probably top 5 material.

Mulholland is prob my fav, and makes perfect sense... i think.

The Hellraiser movies can be summed up thusly:
1 - Great
2 - Good
3 - Meh
4 - Double Meh
Everything else - Avoid like the plauge (AKA Why did I watch these?)

The Candyman movies are significantly easier:
1 - Great
2 - Good or Very close to Great
3 - Boo

I haven't seen Hellraiser or Candyman in a long time. In the case of Hellraiser you could say it's an allegory for drug addiction as well as being full of glorious violence. There is some humanity there and it elevates the whole product. Its sequels are just catalogs of people being splattered just to be splattered. The producers hire cheaper directors and screenwriters, the films slide into being pure schlock (not always a bad thing) and before you know it we arrive at a situation where Hellraiser (and Friday the 13th) has an entry set in space. Brilliant.

Anyway, I watched The Terminator with the Red Letter Media commentary which was fun. I didn't realise how relatively cheap the film was made. It still looks amazing. I just wish the RLM crew wouldn't talk about upcoming scenes in the commentary as it makes me think I've gone out of sync, those hack frauds!

Nothing Bad Can Happen

Not for the squeamish, this gritty drama combines all the dark elements of the human spirit, and contrasts it at the other end with unabashed martyrdom.
