Other than the obvious choices, I really liked Gunhound EX. It's a more modern take on Cybernator/Assault Suits Valken. It's a bit too short though.
Gigantic Army is in that same vein as well but the gameplay is a bit slower and more deliberate and it's not quite as polished an experience.

Lol, i nabbed it from the $1 sale, and it was a toss up purchase between that or Wild ARMS.

There are some great recommendations here. I will add VVVVVV. It is pretty much the best C64 game, and I loved it.
