Thunder 2

Thunder's back, this time on the right side of the law as a new deputy sheriff in the town he had previously destroyed! But corruption abounds in the local sheriff's department, and soon enough, Thunder finds himself unjustly accused and forced into prison, while his pregnant wife is attacked and made to lose the child. What's a young Native American man to do? Get revenge. Get sweet, explosive revenge. Again.

Italy does it again for the Thunder sequel, only this time it's a bit muted in comparison. In general I think it's a superior movie over the first, with a lot of the racism toned down but made up for with a generally better story. It's still not a good story, but it's an improvement that I'll take. Unfortunately it appears everyone in the film was dubbed over, so the acting...well, it isn't so up to snuff. At least in the first film, everyone seemed to actually be saying their lines.

But hey, the stars return: Mark Gregory comes back as Thunder, Bo Svenson once again plays the Sheriff(though his name has gone from Bill Cook to Roger), and Raimund Harmstorf is back as the racist evil deputy...though also with a name change from Barry Henson to 'Rusty'. And Mark Gregory has lines this time! They're just dubbed over. Everybody is dubbed over, usually pretty poorly. Gregory also appears to have gotten a lot lankier, but that might be because he fails to find a properly fitting shirt for half the film. I kept thinking he was going to get lost in all that cloth.

The plot for this one is a little more complicated than the previous "Native gets mad and attacks white folks" storyline. Basically evil deputy Rusty sells drugs and murders folks, and he hates Thunder. So he frames him for selling cocaine and has him sent to prison. Thunder escapes, so Rusty tries to hunt him down and in the process kills his unborn child, injures his wife, and wrecks Thunder's alcoholic lawyer's jeep. So Thunder goes and gets a crossbow and shoots stuff with exploding bolts. Stuff blows up, and Thunder wins.

The violence is again as bloodless as the first film, but there are fewer racial epithets thrown around, making this movie a PG-13 instead of the R of the previous entry. Damn child-friendly marketing strategies!

If anything, this one should be noted for its ending too: as Thunder and his wife ride away while his alcoholic lawyer drives(and drinks), Sheriff Bill Cook/Roger pulls out a rifle, takes aim, and there is a supposed gunshot...though it could all be a trick! After all, how else were they to get Thunder III?!

Under the Skin

Has this film been discussed here before? Despite its several flaws, it remains one of the finest "mainstream" movies of last year. The director tried to channel Kubrick yet despite his failure to rise to his level, he had managed to make a very unique film. The very ordinary cast, the relentless harshness of people and aliens alike, the juxtaposition of conflicting behaviours, a score that fits the images on screen. Flawed, but good entertainment for those who appreciate slow film.

Thunder III

Ah, Thunder. You're like if Rambo and Billy Jack had a tough, quiet love child out in the New Mexican desert. And now I'm finishing off the trilogy.

A group of white supremacist militia members shoot a couple of horses, and when Thunder intervenes, they shoot up and torch a small Native American village and then refuse to pay the damages. When the local sheriff tries to talk to them, they reveal they are the leaders of the nearby white community and decide to go after Thunder instead. What's a young Native American man to do?

Get revenge.

Sweet

Explosive

Revenge.

For a third time.

Mark Gregory returns for the final time as Thunder, the Navajo warrior who is fed up with the crappy hand the local white folks have given him. He's no longer on the force and is instead content to live out his days teaching tradition to the children on his reservation along with his wife, Sheena(wait, her name for the last two films was Sheila. What gives?!) At this point, Bo Svenson is long gone as the nearby town sheriff, but that's ok, as now we have John Phillip Law, AKA Kalgan from Space Mutiny! Kalgan, blow me away! And there is a whole town full of racist scumbags eager to serve as fodder, along with a disgraced Pentagon official named Colonel Magnum who...well, pretty much disappears from the movie altogether. So does the whole militia thing, to be honest. After 25 minutes, it basically vanishes and never comes back up again that the villains all like to wear camo shirts and short shorts while running around in the desert with shotguns, beer, and brotherly love for each other.

That's ok though, because instead, Thunder decides to go into their homes and businesses, vandalizing before their very eyes. And the sheriff? Well, he's not too keen on arresting Thunder because he partly thinks he's justified, but he wants to preserve law and order. He just can't arrest the militia folks without more evidence than Thunder's word. Thunder is even fine with the idea of going to jail for what he's done, so long as the bad guys pay for the damages they did to the native village.

Once again, the violence is largely bloodless, but the open racism of the villains has ramped up a bit from Thunder II, despite still not being at Thunder I level. This movie has the most vandalism of the series, but the least amount of people getting maimed. Really, it's all about property damage here as both sides wage a war of intimidation against each other until someone either goes to jail or pays up. The dubbing is much better here(supposedly this film is entirely Italian language, but everyone's mouth looks to be speaking English properly), and while the acting still leaves much to be desired, there aren't too many egregious sins of filmmaking here...well, maybe not beyond the scene where Thunder smashes a car's windows while the owner shouts "Not the car!" and cowers in the corner while sobbing. That could have been handled better. Not by Thunder, he makes a good silent mob enforcer type. The other dude. It was painful.

So I'm finished with this VHS-only trilogy. It's been fun, and I'm glad to say I sat through it, even if nobody else will have any idea what the hell it is I'm talking about. That's ok, they usually don't.

American Tail - still as good as I remembered, though feels shorter than when I watched it as a kid(though I was multi-tasking so there's that)

Up next Batman(the one with Keaton...I bought the trilogy on itunes awhile back, it's time to watch it now! though sadly I'll have to make a trip up to my dad's to download the movies and everything...my mom's internet sucks when I have to redownload my movies...)
