I experience something that's related tangentially to this, and I'm wondering if anyone else has, too.

Sometimes in my dreams I effectively go blind, but the twist is that it's not because my sight has gone dark -- it's because there is one completely static image that overwhelms my vision and will not fade. It's not like "burn-in," because it's not a residual image or a ghosting effect; in the dream I am really truly "seeing" something, as if I'm stuck staring at one particular thing, despite the fact that I am stumbling around a three-dimensional space crying out for help.

I did eventually figure out what was happening here: my eyes sometimes open in my sleep, and whatever it is that they happen to rest upon while I'm out is the image that gets frozen over my dream view.

I can't explain how terrifying this is when it happens, though. The terror doesn't come from being blind, but from being unable to unsee. Closing my eyes in the dream does nothing, nor does moving my eyes or trying to relax. I can't change the image, nor can I terminate it. It's a terrifying sensory invasion that makes no logical sense, so even while essentially harmless, the freak-out level is high.

I have once or twice experienced lucid dreaming, that was pretty cool. Outside of that the strangest experience for me, and I'm not sure it is rare at all, is my mind incorporating sounds in the environment into my dream when it just doesn't want to give in and wake up.

For instance, if my wife (my alarm clock since she is a naturally early riser) pops in and starts telling me it's time to wake up, but my body is just too tired...it will simply toss her voice right into the dream and change the storytelling to accommodate. I rarely remember my dreams, however I often remember these occurrences. Sometimes they are quite creative in the way they get worked in, more creative than I might consciously be able to muster in the half a second or so in which it occurs.

Probably the weirdest dream I ever had was when I was around 6 or 7. Had a dream where I was trapped in a blanket that wrapped around me kind of like a sack and it was slowly tightening and suffocating me. In reality I was having a horrible fever and my mom said I was yelling in tongues exorcists style. Screwiest thing ever glad I snapped out of it .

I think I have experienced something similar.. I wouldn't describe it to be "terrifying" though, it's usually a static image of a person/friend accompanied by their voice. But it's not like a photograph, I'm actually there with the person as if being interviewed, but I can't move or speak.

I've had this happened a few times as well. It's usually me incorporating my alarm into my dream. I used to be in a band, and I dreamed about us performing; my alarm was a Megadeth song and I thought we just sounded damn good covering it.

Nope, because if there is laughter outside of a cabin in the woods that means there are kids/teenagers up to mischief. Turn on your lights, get some stuff going to say, "Hey I'm awake," and they run off.
