Keep in mind that these two are arguing, more than anything, from an audience/monetary standpoint. Animation is labor intensive and expensive to make. Why do you think US series are so often outsourced to South Korea for the actual animation? Studio Ghibli is currently in hibernation over cost issues. And anime series can no longer sell overpriced physical copies like hotcakes to otaku. The series that will continue to make money are those with lots of merchandising tie-ins, and those are the more soul-crushing ones to make, because you are constrained. Anno probably keeps doing this stuff with Evangelion because it's the only way to guarantee he still has a job. The 80s and 90s, with the glut of more mature and creative material flooding to VHS and DVD, just couldn't sustain that push. Basically, anime won't see that kind of boom again until there is some change that opens up the money floodgates.Xeogred wrote:Anno, Miyazaki, etc, to be in their position and spread nothing but pessimism as they have for years now is not helping any issue at all. Since their attitudes don't seem to be changing, I wish they'd just go away.

While it is true that Japan is not in an anime boom due to DVDs are not new and Japan hasn't taken to streaming as of yet, the US is in a boom with streaming since we seem to be getting everything under the sun now in the official streaming service unlike back before streaming. That being said, he's also been saying the same thing for decades.

Sounds like Naruto Shippuuden just got finished with the latest filler arc finally. Will have to catch up again
. Hopefully they finish up the current battle before the next filler arc or else I'll probably closet the show for the rest of the summer. The last few seasons have been 75% fluff.

There needs to be a "Naruto Kai" where the whole series gets edited down to a hundred or so really good episodes while cutting out all the bs.Fragems wrote:Sounds like Naruto Shippuuden just got finished with the latest filler arc finally. Yeah pretty much filler lists are the way to go if you aren't a completionist. Naruto especially has some of the worst fillers I have ever seen. There are just some mind numbingly dull side stories, and a lot of flashback/recap episodes that aren't necessary.
Re: What Anime are you Currently Watching?/Anime Recommendat
A lot of the longer running Shonen Jump based shows would greatly benefit from the "Kai" treatment, actually. Hell, even a lot of other long-running shows could stand to have a little fat cut. For instance, I love the original run of Sailor Moon, even enjoyed most of the filler episodes if I'm being honest with myself, because a lot of those episodes focused on expanding certain characters personalities (something the new iteration lacks.) But they could easily cut the episode count by half, not loose anything involving the ongoing story line and still have enough left over ample character development.

I feel like filler comes with the territory of shonen series. I'll watch some super-long shows but I go in expecting lightweight fluff and so the filler doesn't really bug me. (I mean, I can't say that it's GOOD but... I tolerate it.)
Also I'll say that I recently started watching Dear Brother (aka Oniisama e...) and I'm completely loving it so far. It's based on a manga from the creator of The Rose of Versailles and has the same director as that show's anime adaptation. It's also super melodramatic constantly and that's something I really love.

Just got a Dirty Pair DVD collection. This is amazing stuff!!!
I just love so much from this era. I suppose I'm a fan of "classic anime" moreso than anime in general.
