I know this isn't necessarily an Anime, but it's heavily inspired by Anime, and I didn't know where else to post about it.

So, yeah.

I recently re-watched RWBY Volume 2, since I've only seen it once (compared to Volume 1, where I've seen it twice).

It's a fun series. Got it's fair share of issues (the animation and VA work is somewhat wonky), but otherwise, it's a great series to try. It's also a web series, so it's really easy to find it.

As far as actual Anime, I've started up Dragon Ball Z Kai on Toonami. I loved it more than I thought I would. Great series! Really hope it continues to be good.
This user really likes SEGA Saturn. Avoid at all costs.

So with anime, right now since Crunchyroll got Detective Conan (Case Closed) I've been watching the current episodes since Funimation stop doing the series. Which is understandable since it is getting close to 800 episodes but also Funimation never was able to promote the series correctly.

It has been years since I watched the series and with all of the new plot related information in the newer episodes I figure I should watch other episodes but I forgot where I was in watching them since I downloaded a bunch of episodes when fansubs were popular. So with the long weekend, me being out of school and having a bunch of time on my hand I decided that I am going to watch every single episode of Detective Conan.

They managed to get it on TV, how is that not proper promotion?

While it was on TV, it was back during the Adult Swim Anime Boom where it aired with anything that sticked, the commercials for it were weird and made it look like an action series. In fact, when I first saw the commercial for it I had no interest in it. The only reason I even watched it was because I left the TV after watching another show and looked at it.

I think I've mostly outgrown anime, except for a very few contemporary titles that manage to tell good stories, the medium to me is aclready dead. Hideaki Anno's prediction doesn't strike me as surprising in the slightest. Most of what is oming out is crap, mostly designed to appeal to weebos and whatnot. Thankfully there's a nice library of older anime that one can fall back to when the end comes.

I was starting to think this too, until I went back and revisited some older anime. You aren't getting too old for it, it's just most of the new stuff is intentionally juvenile and shallow compared to the deeper more serious anime of the past.

You are 100% right about what you just said, and I also am mostly relying on my archives going forward. Anime may not be doomed but it is certainly going through some dark days right now. Too many studios are going for the lowest common denominator with low hanging fruit (ecchi harem schlock). It's creating an over saturated field for the market they are after, while driving away the original more varied demographics that propped up the industry before.

Anno's pessimism is incredibly tiring. I'm sorry I can't take him too seriously when all he's done in the last decade is milk his franchise. Also the context seems off in that article. Anime will more than likely not be going anywhere, but there is definitely a problem with animators and voice actors getting paid nothing. This is the issue that needs focus and change.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that there's a lot of stale stuff out there. But we've got JoJo, the new Hunter x Hunter reboot that was fantastic, Space Dandy from the Bebop director, and tons more legit stuff that I'm not going to try too hard to list but you get what I'm getting at.

Anno, Miyazaki, etc, to be in their position and spread nothing but pessimism as they have for years now is not helping any issue at all. Since their attitudes don't seem to be changing, I wish they'd just go away.

On the other end, you've got Kill em' All Tomino who has been humorously positive for ages now. Gundam: G no Reconguista was somewhat of a mess, but it sure is better than most mecha thesedays.

I've never stayed current with anime. I like waiting for things to come out on DVD/Blu-Ray over here and if a show still has a lot of positive buzz around it at that point, I'll pick it up and watch it.
The amount of anime currently being produced is insane and is absolutely a bubble that will inevitably burst. I think that's at the heart of Anno's criticism of the industry: there's just too much out there to be sustained. BUT, for the folks saying it's all garbage, due to the SHEER VOLUME, it seems like there is a lot of great stuff coming out in addition to the trash! I mean VERY RECENT (ending earlier this year) or CURRENTLY RUNNING shows I've heard great stuff about include Shirobako, Ninja Slayer, Yurikuma Arashi, Your Lie in April, and My Love Story!

I know those shows aren't going to appeal to everyone, but still, that's still a good number of quality shows. My advice to people who feel like anime is all trash these days is to NOT try to keep up with what's airing in Japan: you'll very likely burn out or get angry as a series that starts off good ends up taking a hard turn and becomes completely horrible. Take a break and/or take it easy!

I think it's mostly the "90% of everything is crap" deal. There were plenty of throwaway shows 10-15 years ago when I was keeping up with things more, we just tend to remember the better ones.

If harem shows are big again, it's that they've come back around - they were big when Love Hina came out too. There was a point when every third series was about maids, etc.

I suspect the larger point he has is regarding labor issues. If there are more super-pandering shows targeted at the hardcore otaku, then it's likely because they see them as consistent customers. Similar to, say, the low-budget JRPG market, I think. Small companies can crank those out and keep selling them to a small, shrinking, but dedicated fanbase - but doing so kind of dooms the business in the long run.

Pushing for better budgets might mean creators could take more risks, or keep more in-house rather than outsource to Korea (though that's hardly recent).

While there is a bunch of crap being shoveled I still find 2-3 shows well worth watching every season. Although I do admit the level of ecchi/lolli stuff has been through the roof recently.

Shows I've found well worth watching this season so far are Shokugeki no Soma and Owari no Seraph. Still need to check out a few others such as Arslan Senki that are supposed to be pretty good as well just haven't gotten around to them.

Last season had Nanatsu no Taizai and Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis which were really good.
