Neither are ThunderCats, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, The Transformers, or Challenge of the GoBots...though the movie Revenge of the GoBots is.

Thundercats was Rankin Bass, but Gi Joe and Transformers were Toei Animation

But G.I. Joe was created and written by Ron Friedman. The Transformers scripts were written in America, and some of Toei's animation work was farmed out to South Korea.

No, the comic by Andy Seto is a Manhua, the name for a comic produced in China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan.

Isn't a lot of animation farmed out to South Korea regardless of which side of the Pacific it's getting keyframed on?

I don't disagree with your general assertion of "anime" referring to animation of Japanese origin, which would disqualify those series. Just sayin', at least by modern standards, can't really count the outsourcing.

In the "what counts as anime" debate I always thought it was funny that there's no special name for western comics and cartoons in Japan is there? Aren't they still just called anime and manga?

If so then what counts as anime is just a construct of western fans, there's no official answer.

I remember when we used to call it Japanimation.

Serious answer: at the time anime was starting to break into the US "cartoon" meant animated pictures geared towards children. Once you got beyond a certain age you weren't allowed to admit you liked cartoons. So referring to the stuff from Japan as anime was the R.O.B. to get it in the door.
