Re: SNESdrunk reviews
Agreed. Good channel. And I finally got off my ass, logged into the Tube, and subscribed.
Re: SNESdrunk reviews
Wow, thanks everyone! Now it looks like I was fishing for compliments
Just wanted to show my appreciation for taking the time to watch
Genesis reviews are coming, starting with X-Men (a really hard one to review) and Gunstar Heroes (a really easy one)Despite "SNES" being in the channel title there's no console bias.

OH! I just thought of a good idea for a video. Do a video about the MSU-1 chip.
So it's pretty much common knowledge that some SNES carts had "special chips" like co-processors and whatnot. DSP in Mario Kart, GSU (Super FX) in Star Fox, SA-1 in Mario RPG, etc.
Byuu, which has done a lot for the SNES scene, has created his own enhancement chip for the SNES. The MSU-1, which stands for Media Streaming Unit revision 1. It allows the SNES to stream CD quality audio. Byuu has created a very accurate SNES emulator called Higan (formerly BSNES) which supports the MSU-1. Also, the SNES flash cart Sd2snes supports the MSU-1.
Here's a (not complete) list of games that were hacked to support the MSU-1:

I remember hearing about a bunch more MSU-1 hacks, like Link to the Past and Chrono Trigger. You can find examples of any of these games on YouTube.
edit: Definitely go on YouTube and search "MSU-1". There's a lot of cool stuff. One thing you have to realize though is that, while the MSU-1 will play CD quality audio, it's up to the hacker to choose the right music. I can take SMW and hack in an AC/DC album for the music, but it wouldn't exactly fit. But, there's a lot of great examples on YouTube of what can be done.

I really like the idea of turning some of the high-tech stuff into something a little more digestable/understandable so it can be understood and appreciated a bit more. Thanks Ziggy
Also I had no idea they did this for Top Gear 2, I can't wait to check that out when I get home

Re: SNESdrunk reviews
Some good info here, and the first few paragraphs aren't tech heavy: http://helmet.kafuka.org/msu1.htm
I completely forgot to mention that it can stream FMV, in addition to audio.
So it's basically like if the SNES got a CD add-on, this is the stuff that could have been done. The MSU1 expansion chip offers up to 4GB of data storage in a single stream, which can be used to store, for example, full motion video data. More popularly, it offers CD-quality music playback, leaving the SNES’ own SPC700 sound chip free to do better sound effects and jingles.
