What are some really great licensed games?

Post by KayJay »

Specifically, ones that don't get talked about often (it wouldn't fit in the subject title. )

As in, no Goldeneye 007, Batman "Arkham" games, The Force Unleashed, or NES Capcom games (Ducktales, Chip & Dale, Darkwing Duck) and games like that.

I really liked Back To The Future: The Game. for those of you who don't know, it is a Point & Click adventure game made by Telltale. It's not really as heavy on puzzles as other games in the genre, but makes up for it with it's great writing and humor. Ghostbusters for the Xbox 360/PS3 is also really great. Haven't tried the PS2/Wii versions though.

Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex is the first one I thought of. Yes it got a USA release. GITS:SAC on PS2 uses its source material in very convincing ways, and is an extremely fun action adventure game even if you're aren't familiar with the plot. It's very underrated and practically forgotten due to its age. (Then again, it's a Cavia game, and they seemed cursed from inception to vanish into obscurity.)
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

I'd say the game that came out for the most recent King Kong movie was actually well done, even though if it wasn't the greatest at all of the things it attempted to accomplish.

Yeah, my older brother owns it. :D he hasn't played it yet however, so I'll make sure to tell him how good it is.

I own this game, and I've never watched any Ghost in the Shell anything.

Even though I haven't gotten past the first level, I absolutely loved what I played. It was a well made action game. :)
This user really likes SEGA Saturn. Avoid at all costs.

There are some great Star Wars games out there outside of Battlefront and The Force Unleashed, with the collection of games above being my favorite. The series starts as a Doom style shooter with Dark Forces, and slowly turned into a hybrid of a first person shooter and melee brawler with Jedi Outcast. The final game, Jedi Academy, is a kick ass multiplayer game that still has populated servers.

Another good Star Wars FPS would be Republic Commando. In this game, you command a squad of clone troopers with each having his own specialty. Throughout the campaign, you must position your comrades to effectively negotiate the Battle Droid filled stages.

Sure they're from the 80s/90s, but it's hard to argue against the licensed Disney games for the NES, SNES, Gameboy and Genesis. The stuff done, particularly by Capcom and Virgin was just stunningly well done that made you realize a license didn't mean a turd. Duck Tales in particular was so good it got the recent remaster with the original voice actors, even Alan Young who does scrooge who is over 90 years old reprises his role.

Switch over to PC, again the 90s -- Star Wars titles. There's X-Wing and then a year later Tie Fighter (plus their addon campaigns.) Still probably the best space based and licensed based combat games ever made.

Also in that period, and GoG just blew out the pair -- Star Trek 25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites from a year after, two stunning point and click adventures with some action sequences too. They must be played, even written by the old tv writers and the GoG release also has all the old TV actors voicing their people too.

I enjoyed it more than the actual movie

Adventure Time: Hey Ice King, Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?!! for DS/3DS isn't a perfect game because it's too easy/short but I COMPLETELY LOVE IT otherwise. It's a pure homage to Zelda II and the soundtrack is amazing.
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream for DOS might not be the greatest licensed game but IMO it's probably the most ambitious and deserves mention for that at least!
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis for DOS, a classic LucasArts adventure! I wish I could find my disc, I know I never beat all three paths...
Magic Knight Rayearth for Saturn, an excellent top-down action-RPG
Sam & Max Hit the Road for DOS is another LucasArts classic. (The Telltale sequels less so.)
Scott Pilgrim: The Game for XBLA and PS3 is a great beat-em-up! It made me aware of pixel artist Paul Robertson and the band Anamanaguchi, both are good things.
X-Men: Children of the Atom for Arcade/PS1/Saturn is probably the most noteworthy Marvel game that doesn't get talked about nearly as often as the Marvel vs. Capcom series.
Zillion for SMS is a classic and I'm pretty sure most people are unaware it's based on an anime

I have fond memories of Beavis & Butthead and Garfield: Caught in the Act for Sega Genesis, but I'm not sure if they're really great games or if nostalgia is clouding my view. I don't know if I'd recommend them but I know I had a lot of fun with them when I was younger!

I enjoy the Tenchi Muyo, Sailor Moon, Ranma 1/2, and Magic Knight Rayearth RPGs.
