question about internet phone

Post by casterofdreams »

Hello!

Is internet phone like Vonage a viable connection for going online with the Dreamcast?

Also, is there an increase in speed from the normal phone line standard?

Thank you!

Huh... that's an interesting question. I'm not sure if you can even hook up the Dreamcast to Vonage, but I'm not too up on how that hardware exactly works. If it uses a converter box that takes in a phone line and does the dial over an ethernet connection then I would imagine it would work. And it should be faster than a standard phone line.

dail up DOES work on most VOIP providers, It pretty much has to as it's similar to fax technology. I've witnessed fax machines and 56k modems work through a VOIP connection. it is just as "fast" as a normal phone line, maybe a tiny bit faster but nothing significant. just so you know, the second port on most VOIP devices is actually for a second phone number though, so if you don't get a dial tone out of it, you'll have to stick a phone splitter in the first port so that you've got a jack for your phone and dreamcast. Or, just unplug the phone since you'll be tying up the phone line anyway.

you will however still need a dial up connection that functions with the options available on the dreamcast. It's been so freaking long since I got a DC online, i couldn't tell you which dial-up ISP's would work.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
