Random Gaming Thoughts
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
If folks are screaming for absolute equality, then that's something that would have to happen. What I've typically found is that those that would find issue with that premise don't actually practice what they preach. It's more selective equality than it is actual equality.

Still pains me to see Day 1 DLC especially when it's marketed like this
. Still in the party that believes any content that is created before a game goes to print should be included on the disc. You shouldn't boast about DLC that's going to be available Day 1 two months before release even if it will be "Free" for the first two weeks.

This is what it always boils down to, honestly.Sarge wrote:It's more selective equality than it is actual equality.

Why are those hypothetical people alright with me beating up only men? Aren't women strong enough to be villains? *snark*Erik_Twice wrote:I just fear it will inevitable lead to the usual rounds of "Why do you want to beat up women?"
But yeah, I get it. The discussion has become toxic in most places on the web.
It really sucks that an issue everyone seems to want to discuss right now can't be without the fear of inviting a guaranteed flame war. Your choices are to either not publish it, or publish it and just regard the "misogynist" criers as people who have nothing of value to add to the discussion.
You can't make everyone understand a point of view, you can only do your best.

The fact that you are afraid to share your opinion means that there is no real freedom of speech. Freedom of speech exists only if there is no backlash because of your opinion or what you say, that is my definition of it.Erik_Twice wrote:I drafted an article on female representation on gaming and I'm afraid to finish it because I fear it will attract a lot of hateful people to my Twitter feed. Really, it's a huge bummer and the mere thought of it happening is enough to make me dislike writing it :/

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Freedom of speech as a legal right is not protection from how individuals will react to that speech. There's a degree of personal responsibility, knowing what you say may upset people and either choosing to deal with that or not.RCBH928 wrote:The fact that you are afraid to share your opinion means that there is no real freedom of speech. What you're proposing is counter to the idea of freedom of speech, since it means there can be no dissenting opinions and and thus the entire point of protected speech is nullified.

"Freedom of Speech" and "impunity from criticism" are not synonymous; so, that is a pretty horrible definition. (Seriously. It is like one of Jack Handy's "Deep Thoughts.")RCBH928 wrote:The fact that you are afraid to share your opinion means that there is no real freedom of speech. This is exactly right.Gunstar Green wrote:What you're proposing is counter to the idea of freedom of speech, since it means there can be no dissenting opinions and and thus the entire point of protected speech is nullified.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Freedom of speech gives you freedom to say things without the authorities censoring you or punishing you for it. It doesn't give you the right to say anything without reprisal from your peers or the general public. If it did so it would be self-defeating, because it would deny them the right to speak out against what you have said.RCBH928 wrote:The fact that you are afraid to share your opinion means that there is no real freedom of speech. I guess I'm the only one that's long since tired of talking about this.
Anyways, Skyrim is a good game.
