It's simply patronage. However, I agree that most people don't see it as such.

I love how kickstarter threads always turn into these stupid debates.

I'm stoked, glad IGA is showing them who's boss.

I don't know if I see Kojima going the KS route, rather I see him easily building his own studio next year. Can't wait.

I'm interested in putting up the $60 to get the physical release, but the tiers still confuse me. It seems like $15 for a digital copy and say, $30-40 for the physical one would make sense. After all, if this was picked up by a publisher to begin with and put on Xbox Live it would be $15 right? I guess my question is is this a downloadable game or not? The Kickstarter can't seem to decide.
Also, it's 2015. Physical games are not $30-40 any more, they're $60 on average.
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!
Cheat sheet of my collection, always looking to increase it. 405/677 licensed games, 46/"95" unlicensed
Chronically out of date BST thread

I have this feeling that the Xbox One physical version is going to be incredibly rare

Yeah, Kojima's probably got the money and the influence to not need Kickstarter. I doubt any publisher not named Konami would turn him down.

From the video:
We've found partners willing to support us with funding if we can prove a demand for this style of game.
I think it's safe to assume that they're getting money from sources beyond Kickstarter! I mean, $500,000 is actually pretty modest to fund a professionally produced game with a full team of people working on it. The Kickstarter names 28 people involved; if they met their base goal it would only mean $17,857 per person to last for almost 2 years and that's not taking the cost of manufacturing/shipping rewards. Okay, I doubt all of those people would be constantly and exclusively involved with the game, but still - it's enough of a split to make things PRETTY TIGHT if they didn't have an outside source.

(Fortunately at the rate things are going, even if there wasn't an outside source of funding, it looks like money won't be an issue!)

Typically they're $60, but not on average no. I don't think that's accurate. Most games are $60 and every so often you have a lesser known/lesser developed title for $40. Am I wrong? Are there physical releases this gen that are $69.99 or $79.99 that balance it out? I'm not aware of them.

Either way the point I was making was that if it's a XBLA/PSN-style game as far as content and/or production values it's typically $15. A game released that has cost much more to produce and has retailers taking a cut is $60. However in this case we're looking at $28 for a digital copy and $60 for a physical release with, presumably, no retailer involvement. The numbers are completely unconventional and don't really make sense based on what we're accustomed to.

Iga said the initial Kickstarter was needed to prove project viability to an outside financial partner.

Yeah, they were up front that they already had investors but they needed to use Kickstarter as both proof of the project's viability and for a bigger budget to improve the game.

I also don't think they couldn't have offered the physical console releases up front otherwise.
