Re: Its now possible to play backups by flashing Saturn Cart
Couple of questions...
1) Will there be any issues of using a flashed AR Cart on a console that already has a modchip?
My console seems to be having some issues (X-Men vs. Street Fighter will freeze and give slightly glitchy graphics, long load times and take me back to that Saturn music player thing; but Mortal Kombat Trilogy plays perfectly fine). So I want to go ahead and flash this AR Cart so I have it flashed just in case I have to buy another Saturn console if my current console breaks.
2) Can a flashed cart get around playing Panzer Dragoon Saga? I believe that is the only Saturn game that prompts you to start the game again without a cart inserted. Or is there no way of playing the game with a flash cart inserted?

Re: Its now possible to play backups by flashing Saturn Cart
One thing I was wondering... I have a chip in my Saturn. Say I flash an AR cart to read burns. Now let's say I remove my mod chip. Can I use the AR cart to boot the disc to flash another AR cart? (I'd have to remove the first AR cart and insert the second one).

Anyone got the answers to these 2 questions?Mad_Hatter wrote:Couple of questions...

My console seems to be having some issues so I want to go ahead and flash this AR Cart so I have it flashed just in case I have to buy another Saturn console if my current console breaks. But I don't want to go ahead and flash this chipped console if it won't work with a flashed AR Cart.

btw, have they made any progress with keeping the backup save function?

Re: Its now possible to play backups by flashing Saturn Cart
I have a chipped Saturn. I recently picked up a second AR cart that I can flash, I was planning on doing it soon.
I don't see why there would be any issues with your first question, aside from not being able to test if the flashed AR cart can boot a burn on a chipped console. And I believe I have a burn of Panzer Dragoon Saga, so I'll try and test that out for you when I get around to flashing my AR.
I have to admit, this is a lot less interesting after learning about the Rhea thing. Although, I suppose, Rhea is for after your CD drive is dead, and the flashed AR/GS carts are before it's dead. Either way, I hope they continue to work on and improve both.

Yea, the Rhea looks pretty good. But it's a little pricey atm. And I think it's going to need 1-2 years for it to be easier to use and less complicated compared to flashing an AR and playing CD-Rs. If it gets as easy to use as the Dreamcast GDEMU, I would buy it.
But eventually, lot of us are going to be using the Rhea when the lasers die out on the Saturns. It's going to save a lot of Saturns.

You can use the flashed cartridge on a chipped console. I do it when I want to boot a JP region backup on my US modded Saturn.

Re: Its now possible to play backups by flashing Saturn Cart
^^ Thanks
And I found out that you can actually patch Panzer Dragoon Saga to bypass the "Remove Cartridge" popup. So there's that. I will just burn another copy and patch it.
Anybody know if this project made any progress with allowing you to flash the Cart and also keeping the save backup function? I don't care about cheat functions, but the save backup is one that I need.

Saves unfortunately are not implemented yet, but direct saving to cart is planned in the future.
There hasn't been much news lately on it but I check all the time to make sure.

Wow, if they get that done, I'd be super impressed.
