What are your top 5 favorite Rareware games?

Post by KayJay »

So, after i made the Nuts & Bolts topic, i've starting playing other Rareware games, like Viva Pinata & Banjo Kazooie. Anyways, i figured i'd ask what everyone's favorite rare games are. :)

I do want to point out, that i've only played these Rare games (Donkey Kong Country Trilogy, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Kazooie Nut's & Bolts, Diddy Kong Racing, Mickey's Speedway USA, Blast Corps, Jet Force Gemini, Battletoads, Snake Rattle & Roll, Goldeneye 007, Viva Pinata, Kameo, & Perfect Dark.

Anyways, my top 5 are (in no particular order)

1:Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
2:Viva Pinata (Highly underrated game, truly amazing)
3: Donkey Kong Country 2
4: Goldeneye 007
5: Banjo Kazooie

So yeah, those are mine. What about you guys? i'm really interested to see some of your answers.

Preface: I haven't played DKC3, Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie, and Perfect Dark.

1. Donkey Kong Country / Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
2. GoldenEye 007
3. A Nightmare on Elm Street
4. Jet Force Gemini
5. Blast Corps

Jet Force Gemini would be higher up on the list if I'd played more. I've enjoyed what I've played, though.

A Nightmare on Elm Street? As one of your favorite games from Rare? I recall the Angry Video Game Nerd covering it, so I never paid too much attention. Is it as 'good' as Battletoads?

1. Banjo-Tooie <- 3D platformers don't get bigger or better than this
2. Donkey Kong Country 2 <- my favorite soundtrack in a game ever, tied with Ocarina of Time's
3. Donkey Kong 64
4. Banjo-Kazooie
5. Donkey Kong Country 1

...6. Diddy Kong Racing

I still need to play Conker's Bad Fur Day!

edit: Oh crap that's right, there's also Goldeneye... we need at least a top 10 for this.

you know, i originally wrote down "Top 10", but as i could only come up with 5 that i truly loved, i went with that.

If you guys wanna put your top 10, or, heck, just do a total ranking, go ahead. :)

I have played a lot of Rareware games. The overall consensus for me is the company had extremely talented programmers, pretty good artists, but only so-so game designers. Their older stuff especially was punishingly hard to the point of often not being fun.

That said, these would be the five best ones I've played by them:

Wizards & Warriors
Cobra Triangle
Snake Rattle 'n' Roll
Donkey Kong Country
Blast Corps
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

5. Sesame Street 123
4. Taboo: The Sixth Sense
3. It's Mr. Pants
2. Jeopardy!
1. Perfect Dark (Game Boy Color port)

Here are my top five, in alphabetical order:

Battletoads (NES)
Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
GoldenEye 007 (N64)
Killer Instinct (ARC)
R.C. Pro Am (NES)

I also have to give an honorable mention to the first two Wizards & Warriors games. I played them a lot when I was younger, and I still enjoy them. (I also still need to play Blast Corp., Perfect Dark, and Rare's N64-era platformers. I will probably like them a lot, but I just haven't played them yet.)

Oh boy, another thread of game lists with no information. A simple search of Google or Wiki search can do this.

@ KayJay - For an idea how to do a Thread starter maybe concentrate on one game? This brings actual discussion such as your Nuts Volts Thread. Here is a thread on Donkey Kong Country 3. Sooo much better then just a Thread full of replies of the same repeat game lists.

Hmm tough call. :)

1. Donkey Kong Country (#1 on SNES)
2. Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64)
3. Goldeneye 007 (N64)
4. Blast Corps (N64)
5. RC Pro-Am 2 or Silent Service (NES) Sorry, it's an even toss up!

Toughie really, feel like I'm excluding decent games like Killer Instinct, Perfect Dark, Battletoads (or BT and Double Dragon which I liked more w/out the lame speeder stages.)

It's crazy to think how much they did people may not always realize at first back in the NES era because others published their work. Pinbot/HIghspeed pinball conversions, the Wizards and Warriors games, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Slalom, Silent Service, Pirates!, Super Offroad and the list grows into kid (sesame st) stuff, game shows, and more.

If anyone needs help, wikipedia listing here for anything they developed (even if published by someone else.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_vi ... ed_by_Rare

You're right, I should add more info to my games list.

1. Perfect Dark (Game Boy Color port)
5. Sesame Street teaches me about numbers. How could this not make the list?

4. Finally, the adults only tarot card simulator I have always wanted.

3. Even Rare employees raved about this one with great quotes like, ""We knew that it wasn't a big 'wow' game, but the playability was there."

2. Because Alex Trebek is just as sexy in pixels as he is in real life, and here he still has his mustache. What is 70s porno hairstyles?

1. It's totally just like the real thing!
