Genesis game recommendations

Post by glynnahab »

I recently bought this: http://www.chasethechuckwagon.com/item. ... item=68926

I was hoping you guys could give me some good game recommendations as I pretty much missed out on the Genesis. (I was on the SNES bandwagon.) The console's library is so massive, and there are lots of games I have no idea about. For example, I'd never even heard of Sub-Terrania until Mozgus made the thread about the amazing music from the game. Now it's on my must-buy list.

Please exclude the obvious choices that I'll probably already know about (i.e. Streets of Rage, Sonic series, or anything else mentioned on any of racketboy's hidden gems/cheapest games articles.) So far, all I own is Sonic 2 and the 6-Pak cart that's coming with the console. I've done lots of reading so I'm not completely ignorant, but I'd like to get some input from real people whose tastes I can trust. I'm open to any and every genre - as long as I can afford the game. (I'll stick to emu for games like MUSHA for now. :wink: )

Thanks in advance, everyone.

What the hell? He makes the hidden gems articles BECAUSE they go beyond the obvious choices.

Because Racket and all the contributors to those articles aren't real people.

Here's a few that haven't already been mentioned;

El Viento - tough-as-nails side scrolling beat 'em up
Elemental Master - vertical shmup, similar to Commando or Merc but with a wizard
The Haunting - strange isometric adventure game where you play a poltergeist attempting to scare out the inhabitants of different houses
The Humans - lemming-a-like style game where you have to control a tribe of neanderthal humans and guide them to evolution
Kid Chameleon - brilliant action platformer game where you play a kid who can turn into different things when he puts on a mask
Liberty or Death - brilliant American Cival War based strategy game by Koei
Panorama Cotton - beautiful space-harrier style shooter, probably the best looking game on the Genesis, expensive though
Pulseman - unique platformer, well worth hunting down
Shadow Dancer - best shinobi title on the Genesis (imo)
Shadow of the Beast - adventure game in the vein of Blackthorne, but really difficult
UndeadLine - amazing vertical shooter, also tough-as-nails - one of the most challenging and rewarding games i've encountered

Also, if at some point you pick up a 32x or SEGA-CD i'd reccomend these;

32x -

Blackthorne - Amazing adventure game, plus the 32x version is the definitive version of the game with more vibrant graphics and a bunch of new levels
Knuckles Chaotix - unique and enjoyable platformer, just don't be expecting Sonic-level of goodness
Kolibri - Beautiful horizontal shmup where you play a hummingbird - created by the same guys behind Ecco

SEGA-CD -

Final Fight CD - the definitive home version of Final Fight
Lords of Thunder - amazing horizontal shmup
Popful Mail - great action RPG adventure
Snatcher - Hideo Kojima's masterpiece adventure game, this version is the only English version available.
Sonic CD - the best Sonic game most people haven't played.

There is no way to stress how true that is.

Personal favorites of mine include Ghostbusters and Castle of Illusions starring Mickey Mouse.

It's a completely different game, not just a conversion. The Genesis and the Amiga 1200 got the cool version with better graphics (in my opinion), better gameplay and a sword.
Mostly harmless
