I recently purchased an HRAP2SA, have had it for a couple of weeks and I'm still coming to grips with the square gate on the stick. I have had friends tell me to forget trying to learn on the square and order an octo gate. I'm a sloppy fighting game player and I think that's where most of my problems are coming from with the stick.
Opinions? Suggestions?
Sanwa JLF octo or square?

I dont compete any more but I am use to a square gate. Octagon maybe superior but it really comes down to what you are use to.

Re: Sanwa JLF octo or square?
what fighting games do you intend to play and what character types?
Square style is great for "charge" characters and anyone who requires the directions up,down, left, right to be accurate. Having trouble pulling off dragon punches? Might be a square gate. Square is Japanese style and games such as Street Fighter 4 are designed around their usage.
Octo is better for characters with moves that require the angles up left, up right and so on. Also better for continuos circle motions. Less accurate especailly for down-up charge in Street Fighter games. This config is US style and will feel like the imaginary local arcade to most people over here.
IMO learning on Octo is a better idea, but might not help out however sloppy you may play. You are more likely to hit up left by using Octo gates than using a square. Once you are accurate using an Octo most players use square gate for specific games or characters

Re: Sanwa JLF octo or square?
i personally don't like square gates, i put octogonal gates in both my JLF's. I find sometimes I'll quickly go for down or up on a square gate and put enough force on the joystick that it slides to a corner.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
Consoles: I have too much stuff
Arcade: No seriously, I have too much stuff. Someone grab a shovel and dig me out of my basement.

Thanks for the insight and suggestions.
I guess I'm going to have to find someone with an octo gate JLF that I can try out.
