Re: Games Beaten 2015
This game is everything I hate about stealth games magnified by a factor of ten. It's literally the opposite of EVERYTHING that makes Mark of the Ninja such a great game. That game was pushing the genre forward. AC Chronicles is everything it's running away from.
Chronicles gives you ZERO freedom. Stealth sections are meant to be played EXACTLY THE FUCKING WAY THE DESIGNERS WANT YOU TO. So expect plenty of trial and error. Even once you figure out what to do you'll still fail repeatedly. Why? Because windows of opportunity are minuscule in this game. You have .5 seconds to sneak past that guard before he turns around and spots you. Patrol patterns and enemy placement are designed to almost guarantee you'll get spotted. Enemy vision cones are REALLY...FUCKING...BIG. On top of that, collectibles are often placed in obnoxious places that can get you spotted. AND, the game's fucking stupid scoring system PENALIZES you for killing people in a game about FUCKING ASSASSINS!!!!!
What...the...fuck
So naturally, that makes the game exponentially harder
Oh...and then there's the god awful checkpoint save system. Once a checkpoint is activated, it can't be reactivated. This means if you just realized you have to back track for an optional objective or collectible before moving on to the next section, you better hope that next section doesn't kill you. Not only will you have to do it over again, you'll also have to do all the backtracking all over again.
And should you try to replay a stage for collectibles, you have to play through the entire level again. If you reach a checkpoint and exit out of the game, when you return, the game will "forget" whatever collectibles you got and they WON'T show up in the level again for you to re-acquire them.
Everything about AC Chronicles is designed to frustrate. If you want a "hardcore" stealth game then here it is. I know there's a weird sort of gamer who loves masochistic games like this...so have a blast with it. I'm moving on to games that are FUN and don't raise my blood pressure.

I enjoy your posts, Gamerforlife, but your distaste for modern-day AAA games makes me wonder why you don't just play more retro stuff...

Well, the game is 2D. Does that count
Actually, I'm moving to a new place soon where I can hopefully set up a CRT television and bust out some old consoles
I'm playing Broken Age: The Complete Adventure too, which is old school point and click. No complaints with that game so far as it's pretty much what I expected.

As I mentioned before, I've had this for a while, made it to mission 8 then lost my save and had to restart. The first time I played through I got stuck on mission 6. When I restarted I got stuck on mission 6. Then this morning I decided to take a break from getting my ass kicked in X-Wing and switch to getting my ass kicked by mission 6. But once that was down the rest of the game was a breeze by comparison. I had to restart a couple of the levels because I pissed away too much health early on, but each time it took only one restart.
On the one hand, it's a Star Wars FPS and it's really fun. On the other hand explosives utterly suck to use. They have way too much range and damage on them; the minimum throw on the thermal detonators will hit you with the blast radius unless you backpedal away, and the concussion rifle is pretty much unusable as an everyday weapon because the radius is huge and it strips 30 shields even on the edge of that. By comparison in Doom you can run around with the rocket launcher a lot and not worry about killing yourself.

the stat system that doesn't really seem to matter.
Ok, I need to take issue with this point because it's completely wrong. The way you invest your skill points and aug upgrades makes a big difference in how you approach the levels.
I, for one, welcomed our new AI overlords.

Nice work finishing Brandish, Xumy. I still need to try that remake myself - but the "collector" in me is waiting until I own the actual PSP game.
And CFFFFGHYTRANMA1/2R, I had no idea you were doing an alphabet thing. ActRaiser is a classic I still have yet to complete. Some day.
