First off, I'm surprised that Sony has been so successful at making consoles. I surprised because they are a company similar to Magnavox, Panasonic, and Phillips. All of these companies tried to make a console and they didn't do well (except maybe the Odyssey did O.K., but they still stopped making consoles). Sony however has been extremely successful compared to those companies.
Secondly, you all know that each PlayStation can play something other than games (CD's, DVD's, Blu-Ray Discs). So if the PlayStation 4 comes out and Sony creates a new format that the PS 4 will be able to play there will probably be competitors (Beta-Max and HD-DVDs are some from the past). Now, if one of those competitors wins over Sony's new format, then the PS 4 won't do so great and Sony will probably pull out of the console making business.
After that, all the "Hard-Core" Gamers will switch to Microsoft's new console because Nintendo is to cool for them. This will add to Microsoft's sales and Nintendo could very well be destroyed and all the (Awesome) Nintendo Fans will have to switch to Microsoft to play Mario games. In this switch the more casual Nintendo fans that the Wii introduced gaming to will probably stay with video games and go with Microsoft. Microsoft will get loads and loads of sales and they will have a Monopoly and TONS of money.
I really hope Sony creates a good format for their next console.

Re: Sony
If sony left the console business, I dont know how many "hardcore" sony fanboys would switch to an MS system. Any even if that happened, Nintendo has a formula for making money off of its hardware, and will be able to hang around as long as it wants to.

Re: Sony
Part of the problem is that the world wasn't ready for a new video format. DVD is still very popular and fresh enough and sells very well. Not a lot of people have HDTVs which the Blu-Ray market is geared toward. The difference between Blu-Ray and DVD is not big enough to justify a $10.00 hike in price. I have a PS3 and enjoy it a lot, as a game console not a Blu-Ray player.
Re: Sony
Sony's consoles were successful unlike other similar company's because it did things right and they didn't.
What makes you think that Sony would have to make a new format for a new console? The PS1 wasn't the first console to use CD's

How does that make any sense? Let's say the PS3 never came out, it wouldn't make that big of difference and wouldn't hurt Nintendo at all. Look how well the Wii did, even with a motion sensor remote for a controller and shit for games. Please don't worry, "Awesome Nintendo Fans" such as yourself won't ever have to play the newest Mario on your Xbox. After that, all the "Hard-Core" Gamers will switch to Microsoft's new console because Nintendo is to cool for them. Who gives a crap?
I go where the games are. Whether that's to a Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft console is irrelevant. When it comes down to it, how many of us missed out on, say, NiGHTS because we were playing Zelda, or vice versa?

And frankly, another electronics giant had a hit system, at least in Japan: NEC. The PC-Engine was a partnership between NEC and Hudson and, in Japan at least, it was a smashing success. It was also the first home console to feature a CD drive, so in that sense NEC ushered CDs to the home console owning masses.

They have had a different format on their console so far so they will probably have another format for PS4. Not necessarily created by Sony, but if it fails so will the PS4.Citizin wrote: What makes you think that Sony would have to make a new format for a new console?
