Definitely some classic stuff there. Those were the golden days of Tarja

Their latest album I actually have mixed feelings on after a few cursory listens.

I had just been thinking about this today actually. I've been listening to Luminiferous pretty much non-stop since purchasing. I think I can pretty safely say that this will wind up being my favorite album released this year. High on Fire never disappoint AFAIC.

I've also been on a huge doom kick lately, which is somewhat out of character since I usually reserve doom metal as the soundtrack for autumn. Monolord is straight up legit (dat guitar tone doh! It's like diving head first into a rich vat of dark chocolate fudge), and the new Goatsnake is highly praiseworthy in terms of some good ol' southern fried doom (although if I have one qualm here, it's when vocals are effectively pushed too far forward in the mix for doom metal of which this album is unfortunately guilty).

Thanks for the Mutiilation! I've managed to remain mostly unaware of the French Black Metal scene although I will say I've liked everything I've heard of the most recent Blut Aus Nord effort. Black metal is for winter though(!), so that one has been on my b(l)ack burner for a while.

There was a French scene back in the day called Les Légions Noires (The Black Legions). Kinda comparable to the Norweigan "inner circle" but with far less drama and murder. Mütiilation was by far the best to emerge from this group - many of the other acts are varying degrees of super-lo-fi "black ambient" crap.

And yeah, Blut Aus Nord is the shit. They've always produced some intriguing albums.

Looks like we're going to see a new Baroness album entitled Purple this year! I'm pretty stoked about this news being that Baroness is one of my favorite bands, even as if they've transitioned away from sludge towards a somewhat softer proggy sort of sound. I'm not even sure this post belongs in the metalheads thread, but Baroness has some indisputable metal pedigree, and John Baizley is insanely talented AFAIC. It's always interesting to see what he'll do next.

Not only that, they just dropped a teaser track for the new album! First thoughts: well sonically this song seems like it would have fit in pretty well on Yellow and Green, so if that's the album that made you hate Baroness, you're not going to have a good time. The whole affair seems to be a bit more upbeat than most of Yellow and Green, but the cathartic melancholy was one of the aspects that I really liked about Yellow and Green. So that part is a bit indifferent for me. This change in tonality is to be expected I suppose, being that each Baroness album has had its own overarching theme. It will be interesting to see if this slightly more upbeat attitude pervades on Purple. Starting at about 5:18 in the track ... well, hmm ... they sort of went full on Weezer didn't they? Don't get me wrong I like Weezer just fine, I just don't like when Baroness sounds like they've started a Weezer cover band. Any hoo without further ado, here it is!

Speaking of doom, Windhand just released another new single off their upcoming album! I'm really digging this one, along with everything else they've released so far from this album. AFAIC, Windhand is a band that has steadily improved since their inception, and I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of Grief's Infernal Flower (just in time for Autumn, the true season of doom metal :twisted:). Adding even more icing to this melancholic doom cake is that Windhand is going out on tour Monolord in support of the new album. I'd love to catch that show, but being about 9 hours from the nearest venue probably makes that a non-starter.

Speaking of kickass women in metal, I've also had Myrkur's latest album in heavy rotation. The fact that this one has black metal purists wringing their hands debating whether this album is "trve" or "kvlt" makes me squee with delight. Obsessive genre classification is dumb. I love how this album places ethereal beauty in direct juxtaposition with grimy ugliness. It reminds me a bit of Opeth in this capacity. This is exactly what it would sound like if Galadriel had taken the one ring and subsequently recorded an ambient black metal album.

Ha! I like Myrkur. I recall first reading about the band (and woman) about a year ago and, holy shit, people were enraged.

*busts out My Dying Bride albums*

Okay so, Autumn = doom.
Winter = black metal (duh).
??? = death metal.
