PSP issue

Post by env963 »

Not sure what exactly is going on. Psp keeps turning off 2 seconds after turning on. Never dropped this thing. I took out the battery and plugged it in to see if it boots. Turns on for 2 seconds and than turns off. No custom firmware. Battery is old. (3001 model). But should still stay on when plugged in. Does this sound like my psp is shot? I have tons of games I paid for. I will have to repair or get a new psp. Anyone ever had this issue? Suggestions?

Get or make a Pandora Battery, and run diagnostics? While you're at it, re-flash the same firmware you had or an improved/modded one?

Been a while since I did much with any PSP, but the "Pandora Battery" is actually just the way the service technicians get into the "Service Mode" - like you'd do on a TV with a button code on the remote. Making one involves cutting one wire inside the battery - you can buy ones pre-made in an orange plastic shell too.
Once you get into service mode, you can run diagnostics programs built-in or if you've put the right programs onto a Memory Stick, you can run further diagnostics and/or replace the faulty Operating System with a different one (flash the firmware).

I've heard of the firmware corrupting itself just by having the battery almost-die completely, or games crashing and running a fault op-code.

The Pandora Battery is the first step - it's what the repair guys at Sony stick into your PSP when you send it in for repairs. You can watch a few Youtube videos and see if you're up to doing the next steps to repair the unit yourself for free.

Post back and myself or someone here can help you further.

If this is a firmware issue, you can try resetting the firmware to default settings. This method will not delete any custom firmware, will not downgrade your PSP, and will not delete any games stored on the memory card. Here is how:

0. Make sure the PSP is fully powered own, and not in standby state.

1. Take the battery out. Let all the caps drain for at least 30 seconds.

2. Now hook it up to AC power.

3. Press and hold Triangle, Square, Start, and Select.

4. While still holding those buttons down, flip the Power switch to turn the PSP on.

5. Continue holding the buttons down until the Sony logo appears.

6. Proceed with the setup of the PSP system software.

If this does work and the PSP runs on AC but not on battery, then obviously it's a battery issue. If this does not work, you may have a blown fuse in the internal circuitry.

Thanks, i happen to find a youtube video that says to turn it on by using the hold button. In other words, turn the switch all the way down. Well it worked! I have to carefully slide it back up to unlock. So I guess the switch is acting up. Because i got it to work. Have to watch a youtube video to see if i can fix it.

If you're having to power on your PSP by cycling hold mode, something is probably wrong with your power switch.

As for installing a new one:

You're welcome man. Every time a PSP is repaired a kitten gets its wings or something.
