Help me name this handheld

Post by dustin »

OK so I remember this handheld from when I was a kid and I can not find the name of it anywhere just wondering if anyone here remembers it as well. So here are the facts...

Multiple versions I remember there was a normal handheld kinda one and also a virtual boy style kinda one with a headset. These where exactly the same machine though just different layouts.

Had a star wars game that was sometimes packaged with it. I remember because this was why I wanted it.

I only ever saw it at Toys R Us

This was during the 90's. I would guess mid but closer to late otherwise I would have been to young. It was while I had a gameboy though.

The following are possibly not true as my memory is pretty faded on the subject

Had a red and black color scheme?

It was probably not very good at all?

Anyway I've looked around a lot and can not find anything on it. Just thought maybe someone else had seen one before.

Uhhh... that sounds remarkably like the Virtual Boy itself.

I believe you are looking for a Tiger R-zone.

Wow, this thread has caused a flood of childhood memories and now I'm sitting here with my mind blown. I completely remember the R-Zone - I wanted one too, but never got one.

This is why I love this site.

I have an R-Zone SuperScreen with a copy of Toshinden.

I wanna mod it. Maybe replace the crappy bulb with LEDs, redo the controls, and make it run on something smaller than those big-ass C batteries (or were they D's?).

I mean, what the HELL uses anything bigger than AA anymore? I mean, the voltage of a AA and a C and a D are the same. But if done right, then one could replace the big'uns with AA's and make it run better.

I remember seeing this when it first came out and I thought it just looked like one of those crappy Tiger Handhelds except this was like slamming it in front of your face.

Was this system any good?

From what I've heard about it, it was a good idea but didn't work too well in execution.
