Will a S-Video To RGB cable, work on Saturn for best quality?

Post by omer »

I have a 720p LCD tv and i want the best picture quality for my Saturn.

My question is:

Will a S-Video To RGB cable work for a Saturn like the one in this picture.
I know there will be no sound...however playing Radiant Silvergun with RGB quality is more than worthwhile.

No. The only way that would work is if you got RGB output from the Saturn by using an actual RGB SCART cable for the Saturn then converting the SCART to Component so that it will work on your televisions.

Just getting an s-vid to 'RGB' is like taking composite and wiring it to component and saying that it's better quality. It doesn't work like that. You signal quality is only as good as the weakest link in the chain. In this instance it's S-vid.

You need to get RGB out of the console first, then convert to component. Not the other way round.

Would an SCART to component/VGA adapter end up being higher quality graphics than you'd get from just S-video? Or is the adaption degrading somehow, given the differences in the specs?

For example, this cable. http://www.belkin.com/pressroom/bulleti ... t%20PB.pdf

It does say "Note only compatible with devices capable of transmitting component video output" though

Edit: Looks like they were discussing the logic of this over in thread http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... =25&t=9459

So I have a Saturn and I have the composite cables(red, white, yellow) is it worth getting the s-video cables?,is their a big difference between the picture? I going to play mostly 2D fighters on it not much 3D stuff.

The difference is incredibly minimal.

RGB is the best output you can get from the Saturn. For you guys in the US you would need to convert RGB output in the form of SCART to component since your TVs don't have SCART.

S-Vid is a slight upgrade over composite (aka yellow rca cable plus 2 mono cables for audio). The only difference is that S-vid has the chroma and colour on seperate pins whereas composite has them both on the same pin hence the name.

So my advice is figure out how to get SCART input on your TVs first, that's the hard part. Once you have figured that out, buy a Saturn SCART cable.
