COIN OPS HELP. Xbox not recognizing new roms?

Post by loganm187 »

I posted this on the coins ops emulation forum web site, but that place looks like a graveyard so I thought I'd try here to see if anyone can help me.

I just modded my first xbox and put coin ops 6 R16 on it successfully. When I Transferred everything over I just put 26 random roms in the "ROMS" folder to just make sure everything was cool before I added more. All of these roms I got from the complete coins ops 6 release I downloaded (I just took some roms out of that download and put them in my stand alone Coin ops 6 R16 download because I'm just working with the standard Xbox HDD) and everything worked fine!

Both Killer Instincts booted as did older stuff like 1943, so then I went back into File Zilla FTP client and just started transferring over more roms into my "roms" folder on the xbox and...NOTHING. The xbox says they are on the HDD, but when i boot Coin ops they are nowhere to be found. Any help guys? This is driving me crazy! I have rebooted the xbox, shut it down, restarted the FTP, deleted and replaced the files through FTP and the same thing...it will only display the original 26 games i transferred over. Thanks.

I haven't looked into for awhile, but basically you have to rescan them. I think there's option in the CoinOPS menu to do this.

It used to be that you "had" to have a full set of roms or it wouldn't work, implemented on purpose for god knows what reason. To save space I had to "trick" CoinOPS and replace the zips with 0kb files through a batch script. If this is the case you're pretty much screwed unless you figure that out.

Anyway... may I suggest using a computer for MAME instead, along with a USB controller/arcade stick? CoinOPS uses a lot of game-specific hacks and workarounds to get the games running well on the limited Xbox hardware, and definitely doesn't focus on accuracy of the emulation. Plus, you have much more control over the video output through PC (with CoinOPS, a filtered stretched image in 720p being the max resolution and 480i being the minimum. Stuff like Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat you have no choice but to have a stretched bilinear-filtered blurfest).
In case you're interested in such, what I use personally is GroovyMAME and a VGA-to-component transcoder box to hook up to a standard definition CRT. GroovyMAME specifically replicates the timing of the video output of the ROMs so there's no tearing and outputs in the game's original resolution, is what sets it apart from vanilla MAME.

I feel like an idiot...rescanning, duh. It worked by the way! I have a old pc with game ex on it, but I just acquired a ton of old xbox consoles and just wanted to mod them with just arcade games for friends and around the house. I do have one issue though I have noticed, It takes the games forever to start loading after I choose one. On this old modded xbox I have from years back the games load right up. This one hang at the game selection menu after i press start for like 2 minutes before it loads...any ideas? And thank you so much!

You can find all these answers in the readme file, which is in the read me folder of CoinOPS:

Q - My Games take so long to boot?
A - The XBOX saves all info about roms when you launch a game some Hardrives struggle to do this well.
You can disable the saving of info to speed this up in the advanced settings "Disable Info Tracking For Slow Game Loading"
