Wii Punchout Question - Wii Original vs Selects

Post by CRTGAMER »

Wii Punchout Question - Wii Original vs Selects
I asked this over at the Random Gaming Thoughts Thread, but it got buried quickly by three pages of posts.

The Wii Doc Louis Punchout Download game allows use of the DPad to quickly select Menu Options. This is handy since the game is best played sideways NES style. However, on the disc game Wii Punchout original white cover release, the Menu Options require use of the Wiimote pointer moving a boxing glove cursor arrow.

Anyone that has the Nintendo Selects version; can the Menu options be selected with just the Dpad of the Wiimote?

I didn't know a selects version was released. I've seen dozens of originals at various new and secondhand stores but never a select. So...no idea.

He likes to hold the wii mote sideways like an NES controller. So having to swap back and forth every time you enter a menu is probably annoying.

THIS. Game plays so much better using the original control method of the NES. The Menu selection even more annoying when I use my modded Wiimote NES controller. So many rematches, have to switch controllers just to get back to the game. Doc Louis is just a couple of taps with Dpad and button to go another round; no lightgun aim pointing needed.

The game is so good, I have been really going at it with the NES pad. I'm tempted to gut out a SNES pad and wire it up to the same 9 pin connector. Tonight its EPYX 2600 stick fight night with Punchout!

Thanks, hope you have that Selects version. Very curious about this, tempted to pick up the newer release if it has the Dpad Menu. Funny that a Select or Greatest Hits version is more rare with lower production numbers and sometimes includes fixes, yet is valued as such. :?

Darn just the standard version :P. At one point I had the selects version but I probably sold it when I picked up an earlier copy. Been trying to ween myself off keeping variants.

I have the selects. As I recall, it is identical to the original release.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Oh crap! Thanks for checking though.

Ah well, I was hoping there would be revised code in the Selects version. Does not happen too often, but sometimes there are fixes and upgrades.

When you get a chance, could you load the game and try the Dpad to select the Menu options?

Oh and I tried out the EPYX 2600 stick with my modded Wiimote. Side Stepping, Ducking and Blocking sooo much more responsive with the micro switch switch stick! Only downfall with the 2600 stick is only right hand punches due to just one fire button. Getting up after knocked down is a "Stadium Events" mad tapping of just the one button.

I beat the Don Flamenco boss, thanks to the EPYX quick move stick. Side step moves are perfect slapping the stick when he does the three count punch swings. Now have to "slug" thru the final World Circuit set of fighters. I can already see I really need both gloves to defeat them, certain moves require a follow up specific left or right hand punch.

The Wii Fit Pad is a controller option for the movement; this game really needed a Classic Controller option to play with an Arcade stick.
