Random Thoughts Thread
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I say if you are happy with it, that's all that matters. I was just speaking on how my head works. I am probably a bit snobbish about it to be honest, it makes sense to own it whatever way works best in your own situation.

I think you swapped around some words here, but I get what you are saying. Producers aren't really held to any standard but what the government forces, and even then that line gets murky enough that it gets crossed. Producers hands get forced by consumers more than anyone else. Everybody wanted lean meat in the late 80s and into the 90s, so US producers introduced continental European breeds in cattle, which were larger and had less fat. Then in turned around back to heavy marbling and low amounts of seam fat, after people complained about taste, so there was a movement of producers to breeds with heavy marbling. It mostly went down to Angus at that point. After Angus became a marketing term, producers pulled a magical move- packers and such don't have a way to actually check breed, other than coloring, so everybody bred versions of cattle breeds that are black, like Angus, so packers actually don't know what they have until they start cutting it up.RCBH928 wrote: I think I saw it on Food Inc. . It might might beat packers but its all the same since I believe that meat packers force meat producers to apply a specific set of standards. So although they do not own the ranch/cattle they still get raised and fed as the producers wants them to be.
A similar thing happened in the hog market, although the changes were much quicker due to how most hog productions are set up. Sheep and Goats are interesting in that they are actually more based on markets outside the mainstream, so the producers there pretty much do whatever the hell they want.

The thing about DVDs is even if you don't notice the difference between a DVD and Bluray they are both priced similar, Bluray is more scratch resistant, probably going to outlive the DVD and fetch a higher price if you wan to sell later on. DVD has almost no advantage between Bluray and streaming, but its still selling strong.
My only guess is that the consumer mindset is "No one I know has a BD player, so I won't get it either" . They are in the comfort zone. Given that all BD players will play DVDs, there is almost no reason not to upgrade.

You bring interesting facts, you sound like some one who knows about this business, but we derailed from the main topic which is - capitalism will always end with a monopoly or oligopoly

Are the stats you're looking at for new release sales, or sales in general? There are still plenty of films without a Blu-ray release, or ones for which the Blu-ray is a new release (and priced accordingly) where the DVD is dirt cheap.RCBH928 wrote:The thing about DVDs is even if you don't notice the difference between a DVD and Bluray they are both priced similar, Bluray is more scratch resistant, probably going to outlive the DVD and fetch a higher price if you wan to sell later on. Newer movies, sure, pay another few bucks for the combo pack and have both. Probably cheaper than rebuying the movie when you do upgrade your setup.

This morning on the radio there was a commercial for a Judge Judy where one of the parties attacked the other party for parking in a handicapped spot when she wasn't handicapped.
Luke, should I tune in so I can see you on Judge Judy?

Wait. I can get a free trip to Chicago AND meet Judge Judy by doing what I already do?MrPopo wrote: Luke, should I tune in so I can see you on Judge Judy?
Aw man...I'll let you know if and when I'm on her show.
Is there a Judge Judy video game?

There is a deadliest catch, Duck Dynasty and Desperate Housewives video games, so it would be a logical conclusion that there should be one!Luke wrote:Wait. Yeah, I kind of stopped at DVD and generally just stream most things I want to watch today. It's not very frequent I actually want to own a movie anymore, there are only a few things I care to watch more than once, so I never bothered to get a BluRay player.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Going to channel my inner Luke here and state unequivocally that most of this TV stuff makes no difference to me. I choose DVD generally because it's cheaper. Half the time I'll watch them on a CRT or VGA monitor.
I bought a TV last week that was 720p. Whatevs.
I've also never understood why people go ga-ga over various console hook-ups. Brace yourselves: my SNES was hooked up via RF until a couple of years ago and I was completely satisfied with it. Generally I just stick to the "standard" connection that comes with the system.
Full disclosure tho - I am colorblind so that may be a huge contributing factor and explanation of my general apathy here.
I've always been happy with "good enough." My tolerance level is pretty high. I'm not going to argue that higher fidelity isn't better or unnecessary it just isn't as important to me.
Well that depends, if you're buying brand new DVDs of new releases in stores then sure. If you're buying already devalued old movies then it doesn't matter if they hold their value.RCBH928 wrote:The thing about DVDs is even if you don't notice the difference between a DVD and Bluray they are both priced similar, Bluray is more scratch resistant, probably going to outlive the DVD and fetch a higher price if you wan to sell later on. Pretty sure any DVD I own is going to outlive me anyway so BlueRay durability isn't a concern I have.

Duck dynasty has almost one of everything out there. Yarns, fabrics, shoe laces, flip flops, can openers, soundtracks, shoes, headphones, etc. Surprised they haven't licensed a dd gay but sex lubricant.BogusMeatFactory wrote:

I wouldn't be surprised if dd licensed as many products as the kardashians.
Random though/random gaming thought:
A friend of mine accused another friend of mine of intellectual theft. The claim is that Minions are nothing but a knock off of Rabbids, straight down to the fact that Bob has the same eye colors as the main Rabbid. My reply was, "Maybe that's a tribute to the Rabbids", but apparently "Minions vs. Rabbids" is an actual thing that people discuss a lot.
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
Yes I meant new releases. Obviously a DVD from 1999 is much cheaper than a 2015 Bluray. My point was that newly released DVDs is still going neck and neck with Bluray.
I wonder if Bluray is going to be the new "LaserDisc" . The higher quality option that no one will buy.
