One I just remembered: Final Fantasy IV
My childhood friend rented it because the screenshots on the back of the box looked cool. We turn it on and... wait, and wait, and wait through all the dialog, scenes and simulated battles. When you finally get control of your character, you just wander around the castle until your girlfriend tells you to go to sleep. I think we turned it off after that. To be fair, we were each 9 years old and were way into Super Mario World, LttP, Bulls vs Blazers, Super Baseball Sim 1.000, stuff like that. We were bored to tears from FF and swore those games off entirely.

He and i would been the best pals, i remember playin quite a bit of joust on the NES

Though if i had the choice maybe i would prefer mortal kombat too since it was the "forbidden game" from the parents. That and GTA are the only two games i remember my parents saying do not play that. Funny enough we eventually got a SNES and a copy of Ultimate mortal kombat 3 and expend every minute re watching th fatalities of Shao Khan's treasure.

It was inspired by the mention of E.T. which for me, wasn't the first game I remember sucking because I actually thought it was alright and by doing what the manual told me to I even beat it as a kid. I had no concept of people thinking it was a bad game. The same goes for Pac-Man 2600. I had more exposure to that version than the arcade so I thought it was alright at the time.
I know what you mean. I owned Superman 64, and thought that the only reason it was "bad" was because i wasn't good at it. in my mind, every game was amazing. xD
Currently Playing: Hatsune Miku Project Diva F 2nd (PS3)

I detested most 2600 games, lamenting their lack of detail in contrast to the beautiful cover art haha, not to mention being mostly shallow as hell. Also Thexder on MSX.. Made me mildly claustrophobic

Gonna go with Superman 64.
I got sick one day on a road trip, so my dad went into Blockbuster Video (RIP) and grabbed Superman 64 for me.
I got home.
Played it.
Had no idea what I was doing.
Turned it off.
Played Super Mario 64 instead.
That is easily one of the worst games I've ever played.
The only thing worse than it, is Bubsy 3D.

This user really likes SEGA Saturn. Avoid at all costs.
Re: What was the first game you remember hating?
You know, there are a lot of games I don't like, but there are few I outright hate. I tended to just not play the ones I had that I didn't like, so I never really built up any hatred.
Still, there was one, and it's a doozy. Super Mario Bros. 3. Yes, you read that right. And there were a few reasons for that.
First of all, almost all my friends would ignore all the other good NES games for SMB3. Especially Mega Man, which was easily my favorite series at the time, and all the good RPGs as well. It was frustrating, but there it was. I resented the game having such a grip on folks, and Mario games in general. (Kinda like FFVII, but I waited for that game for years, so I hold less against it. Also, SMB2 was so weird that I loved it.)
The other reason, though, was I used to watch my cousins when I was younger. Every single time I'd come over, one of them would want me to beat SMB3. Every. Single. Time. And so I did. I probably beat that game at least 30 times, and I had the optimal route memorized. Complete first two worlds, use P-Wing on airship and Lakitu's Cloud on fortress, slide through Bowser's castle virtually untouched. It got old, fast.
Suffice it to say, I grew up a little bit and I don't detest the games. In fact, I dare say SMB3 sports my ideal Mario physics, and the creativity on display is spectacular. It's still a fine game. But for a while there... bleah.

Re: What was the first game you remember hating?
When I was a kid I was very good at finding the silver lining for any game, even if it was objectively bad. That said, the first game I can recall playing that I absolutely hated everything about was:
I absolutely loathed the graphical style and the gameplay was piss poor. I was hoping for something like Bonk, but I was hoping in vain.

PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Silver Surfer, on the NES.
It might actually be the reason why I hate the entire shmup genre. It's such a bad game, I can still feel my childhood rage when I think about it.

But at least you got that glorious, glorious music.
Come to think of it, that's the only positive with Treasure Master as well. Ugh, not a good game.
Re: What was the first game you remember hating?
I think the first game that I really realized was just poorly designed was E.T. on the 2600. We bought it new, of course, and it was just... ugh. It was the first time I truly understood that the mechanics of the game were a problem and not my abilities.
