What was the first game you remember hating?

Post by Gunstar Green »

Sort of a spin off of this thread: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 44&t=48743

It was inspired by the mention of E.T. which for me, wasn't the first game I remember sucking because I actually thought it was alright and by doing what the manual told me to I even beat it as a kid. I had no concept of people thinking it was a bad game. The same goes for Pac-Man 2600. I had more exposure to that version than the arcade so I thought it was alright at the time.

And that was the case for a lot of games. Games were fun, I didn't know when they were supposed to be bad until I got older and my opinions began to form.

For me the first time I remember a game being terrible was Ghostbusters for the NES. I still remember renting it. I even remember my grandma was babysitting me that day as I stared blankly at the unimpressive screen.

Not only was I confused by the gameplay but nothing looked or felt like the Ghostbusters. The graphics looked like they belonged on a 2nd gen system and hell, some of those actually got better looking versions of Ghostbusters.

The song was there but everything else was so terrible it almost felt like it was mocking me. This was my first brush with disappointment in gaming.

Now this is a good question
Like you said when you're a kid everything is good no game can be bad! But even at a young age you know it deep inside you when something is wrong.

I think the first game i feel like disliking/hating is bart vs the world i remember struggling with the damn controls all the time and i even managed to reach the final boss and then quit it there. There's also home alone 2 on the nes. Why did i try to play them so much? Oh yeah i didnt have anything else. Still lot's of nostalgia on those games.

If you really want me to talk about a game i HATE just say resident evil 6 and i will rant for hours.

AD&D: Heroes of the Lance

I was so disappointed with it, and I still hate it.

Snake Rattle 'n' Roll. That game was based around the Rare design philosophy of the time, which was "if people can see the end we have failed". It's got this weird isometric presentation with very precise platforming and sketchy hit detection. It's amazing to watch a speed run of it, since that seems to be the only way to reliably completely the game, as otherwise all of what is in there will fuck you up.

Gex: Enter the Gecko on the Game Boy Color. It was recommended off the cuff from some kid at the Target I was in at the time, so I bought it blind (the FIRST game I ever bought blind as a kid). It's absolutely horrid. The music is so dissonant and ear-grating it makes it that much worse.

Not to mention I also bought the OTHER Gex game for the GBC with it, as the damn kid recommended that as well; that's a lot of money to plop down with minimal allowance back in the day.

I even remember TRYING to like them as I basically never encountered a "bad" game before... ugh.

Not to be confused with Gex: Enter the Gecko on the PS1, which I played more recently and is pretty great TBH. Definitely underrated.

Growing up, I was a Nintendo kid through and through. Had a NES, Game Boy, and (eventually) a SNES.

I had this babysitter all through elementary school. I was dropped off at her house every morning with a few other kids my age. Her son was this "cool" high school kid. He owned a NES and Genesis (whoa).

Occasionally he would hang with us dweebs and let us play his games. The catch was he was always the one to dictate what we played. Usually it was Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam. I was entranced by these games. They totally blew my balls off and since I didn't yet own a SNES I savored every moment spent with the Genesis ports.

But this young man had some peculiar tastes in NES games. For starters, he loved Joust. We played Joust far too often. I did not like Joust. Those damn slippery ostriches. I've grown to appreciate it in my old(er) age - it's a Golden Age classic - but imagine you're an eleven-year-old in 1994. Would you rather be performing fatalities and slammin' "on fire" b-balls..... or playing Joust?

Another favorite of his was Karate Champ. This one was just inexplicable. It's barely playable and not even remotely fun. We played this at least twice a week and I hated every second.

Oh my gosh, he was the first retro-gamer!

Don't put "cool" in quotes, dude. He really was a trend setter.

Raiders of the Lost Ark for Atari 2600 confused the hell out of my primitive brain

Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball was infuriating in principle and in execution. Seriously, why the hell did Bill freaking Laimbeer of all people get his own game? That's like getting a Kendrick Perkins video game today. And the gameplay itself was beyond bad - only uses one button, can't tell the players apart, next to impossible to score... what a disaster

Raiders of the Lost Ark comes to mind. Hate is a strong word but as much as I wanted it to be fun, it sucked.
