What was the last movie you've seen?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I thought the Goldbergs did basically everything wrong as far as period pieces go. See The Americans or Freaks and Geeks for how to do it properly. Or even That 70s show.

It's basically one of those shows that doesn't really have any jokes. It just references things that happened in the 80s. Often times stretching them to extreme obsessions for the characters that have more in common with current nostalgic trends than how anyone responded to those things in the decade itself. Remember The Goonies? Well here's an episode about the character being obsessed with The Goonies! Remember rollerskating? In this episode the whole family goes rollerskating!

dsheinem wrote: preach, brothers! the show also does no favors to the public perception of people who identify with nerdy interests (e.g. video games). References to the "weirdness" of knowing how to level a character in WoW, caring about Tolkien's writing, or knowing where films diverge from comic book canon isn't a bunch of winking nods to an appreciative audience...they are punchlines meant to ridicule nerd culture.
See that's bull, this idea that TBBT attacks nerds in some malicious way is haters just seeing what they want to see and clearly biased hate. I already pointed out how it makes fun of other people too, like religious fanatics, jocks, cranky old people, overprotective parents, actors, etc. And I could counter everything you said there by pointing out how the girl who makes fun of them for those things is routinely portrayed as an idiot, which she herself gets made fun of for.

Let's ignore the fact that the nerds this show is ridiculing have hot girlfriends and successful careers too, clearly the writers just hate them. Let's ignore the fact that only nerds in this show's universe seem to have anything of value in their lives (Penny had NOTHING going for her in her life until she met them).

I don't disagree, it's cheap and I'm a sucker. It's inoffensive and sometimes clever though. I didn't even want to watch it at first but it grew on me.

Re: The Big Bang Theory. You are all wrong. Mayim Bialik rules. At life. Also Barenaked Ladies.

Whether or not it's to be believed (to which I really can't comment), Chuck Lorre responded to accusations of a laugh track with the following vanity card. (Every show has a random vanity card from Chuck Lorre at the end) Like I say, I really have no idea, but at least according to him, it's not a laugh track (although this is admittedly a horrible photo stitch job).

We had a member attend a taping of the show. It did not look like that.

Seriously. The forums are killing it tonight. (mjmjr's post was drastically funnier than any episode of The Big Bang Theory.)

Like most sitcoms, BBT makes fun of everyone. It makes fun of nerds more because the main characters are supposed to be nerds. It is offensive, self-deprecating, and wish fulfillment all wrapped up into one, and it tends to be polarizing. Some are truly not into the humor, and some love it. I'm in the love it camp.

You know what I don't like and don't find funny? Seinfeld. The episodes either bore me or make me uncomfortable/embarrassed for the characters. I bet that'll rile up some of y'all.

WB really went with the "there's no such thing as bad publicity" marketing strategy with their next wave of DC films...
