Man, people destroy me here. Oy vey.

Ironically, I think another game I spent tons of time with was NBA Jam: Tournament Edition. I had the PC version, and it was awesome. Nearly arcade-perfect from what I could tell. Ironic, because I'm really not a huge sports gamer, although I do enjoy sports. And along with that, I spent a lot of time with Tecmo NBA Basketball on NES. Quite excellent, that one. Although you really start to suss out the AI routines, and start swatting shots with regularity. I would routinely double up my opponent's score.

Also, in real-world basketball news, my Spurs evened up the series with the Clippers last night. Lets... not have too many thrillers like that the rest of the way.

EDIT: Why does it feel like I'm always the first post on the next page lately? I apparently have a knack for it or something...

I think FF 12 is probably my most logged game with 70+ hours but aside from that I have easily hit the 40-50 hour mark in tons of RPGs. I am not a completionist by any means but I do like to do the side quests I find fun.

I also don't want to know how much time I've put into SSB on the N64
The McCollum wood burned well.

GO RAPTORS!!
GO BLUE JAYS!!

Civilization V (including both expansions): 2,271 hours

No logs, but I have hundreds of hours for Rise of Nations, Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye, and Perfect Dark.

Got a couple of RPG's I've beaten multiple times (FFVII, Morrowind) and some games that I played everyday after school for years, (Super Mario Kart, Goldeneye) but the one I have a concrete number for is Football Manager 2010 where I have three saves each with five days logged into them.

Oh here is one that I didn't think to include.

World Series Baseball '98 - 1 bajillion...yes bajillion hours. I made a goal when I was young to complete a full season and win the world series as the Toronto Blue Jays. Why? Because, that is what I wanted to do. So I spent a good year playing that game regularly, only to lose my save data and try again, only to have someone borrow my system and erase all my save data and try again only to finally complete it to receive an awesome, "Congratulations." screen. I played a full 162 game season almost three times over to receive a stinking, "Congratulations," screen.

Doesn't matter though... the game is seriously the most fun baseball game out there.

^ Fantastic achievement Bogus.

Mine (all happen to be on the Genesis except where noted):

NHL '94 - I probably played through the playoffs with every team except for Anaheim and Florida (because in those games - bad players = skate slow). '93 had some good run for me but nothing like 94. Tried to recapture the magic with '95, and while I loved customizing the rosters (finally) and actually playing a season, my saves failed and cart was reset - frustrating me and killing off the magic.

Bill Walsh College Football '95 - honorable mention to College Football USA 96, which had EVERY NCAA team. I'd call it a push between those two. I was super into college foots games over their pro counterparts at this time.

Madden '94 - the game we'd race to my buddy's house to play after getting off the bus and before I had to run home to beat my Mom getting back from work. Then I got my own and pretty much played it nonstop until Bill Walsh swept me off my feet.

Coach K College Basketball - the best, still was playing in the summer of 97 and 98 with my cousin.

World Series Baseball '95 - this also got a retro revival for my roommates and I back in 2000-2001.

NBA Live 95 PC - first exposure to the world of downloadable rosters. Was playing this well into 97-98. The future PC games just didn't have that classic isometric feel to them. The PC game had awesome photos and great graphics for the time. Still have it.

Due to the nature of some of these I won't have exact numbers, but these are what I believe to have eaten the most hours of my life:

Arctic MUD: Over a span of 6 or 7 years this kept me stuck to my computer far too often and for far too many hours at a time. I can't even hazard a guess right now, but I can safely say it was multiple weeks of playing time at least.

Super Mario Kart: Played this almost every way one could imagine and still play it from time to time now. A couple years back I started working on competitive time trialing and that lasted for more than a year, so I probably logged about 200 hours in that period alone.

NHL 96: The 94 version ate up a lot of time, but 96 did the most damage for me. I probably played through 6-8 seasons on my own. At least one season playing co-op with my best friend and then at least two more seasons where I played goalie while he controlled the offense. Also for several months, at least a couple times a week I would have a "Best of 7" with another friend after school.

Final Fantasy 6: I played through this game twice on the SNES, with the most time spent on the second playthrough where I maxed out the levels(and anything else I could max) for all characters. I don't remember the times on the cart, but it certainly would have added up to more than 100 between playthroughs.

Daggerfall: Bought this game during my first year of university. Bad call. No way for me to account for the time spent, but that was my go to game for probably 3 years.

More recently I've put nearly 90 hours into Mario Kart 8 (and that will certainly continue to build), about 80 hours each into Phantom Brave:We Meet Again and Samurai Warriors 3 on the Wii.

I'm sure there are others that I'm missing over the years, but I think I've caught the biggest ones.

Props for the MUD love. Good man...good man!

I had to do the math 12.000 hours is 500 days witch is 1 year 4 months 5 days. How does MMO players do that?!

Well, I started playing FFXI a week or two after it came out on PC in the U.S. in 2003, and have had my account inactive for maybe a couple years combined since then. Originally, it was hard to actually get much done without having at least a couple hours to play, if not several. Get into a group doing stuff, and getting on several nights of the week at least for planned activities...adds up.

The other factor there is that it becomes somewhat common to just leave characters logged in. Whether because of only occasionally checking on or doing something, to leave them there selling something (not all items can be put on the AH, but can be bazaared), or just 'cause.

If you mean the psychology of how to get players coming back for thousands upon thousands of hours, eh, might vary from person to person. XI is very different from WoW or most post-WoW games, and most of those don't stay interesting to me. I'd say the level of horizontal progression in XI is the big thing, outside of social aspects.
