Will a Japanese Mega CD backup ram work with a US system?

Post by Anubis »

I want to get a RAM back up cartridge for my Sega CD. I found a site that is selling Japanese RAM carts for a decent price. Would the JAP cart and a US be compatible?

I already have a genesis region converter.

I had the same doubt for an eternity.

Then, willing to play the "secret" third part of Shining Force CD, I decided to take my chances and try a Japanese Backup Ram. For my surprise and your relief, it worked.

Although, there is that plastic piece in the Genesis which do not allow Japanese cartridges to work in the american Genesis, but if you take it off (the plastic piece), the Japanese Backup RAM will work just fine.

Good luck!

The above method works for Japanese games on any other region Mega Drive/Genesis too.

That method DOES NOT work on Genesis/MD systems for some Japanese imports. A lot of the newer games are region-locked. Basically, a lot of the stuff from 1994 and later are locked. Not all games, but a lot of them. If I recall correctly, Sonic 3 is region-locked... but not Sonic & Knuckles (strangely). Be very cautious when importing Japanese games on a foreign system.

If you do want to use that method, I recommend using something like a Game Genie to bypass the plastic region-locks on the imports that are region-free. You don't have to do anything physically to your system then.

You do realize this thread is three years old, right? $30 isn't even really a great deal for that. If you look around, you can find it for less. Likewise with the Sega CD version; you shouldn't pay more than $30-40 for it.

Yes, I think they're more expensive than they used to be too. When I last checked, they were regularly selling for $50 or more.

Well its good to know anyway. PAL versions of the cart are impossible to find but I do occasionally see jpn versions on evilbay from time to time. I've already widened my cart slot to take japanese games anyway.

I've bought a few Japanese Mega CD RAM carts CIB in great condition for less than $10 each + shipping, from Japanese sellers on Ebay.
