That's the only thing I turned up as far as a version difference goes, a time limit on powerups. Would that really be it then? So is the time limit in the old or new version?

Limited weapons in the Old Version. I think there are other differences in terms of number of enemies and bullets. The ships that throw out a lot of medals when they explode don't seem to appear in the older version either.

Ok then. I got to play this for real many times years ago, but it was the USA version, which is based on the New Version AFAIK.

A 6-digit score that's actually good? For this game, it is.

I was playing the new version and got a score like you got on the old version? I know % of enemies destroyed is a large component of your score, but maybe I'll see about trying the old version too.

Still on New Version, but found the missiles to be really good. So good in fact I was able to get 100% on Stage 2.

Time to get back to this, I was on holiday for a couple of weeks. Still got a week or so to improve on my score. Stage 5 would be nice, at least...

As for tips, if you're keen on getting in close and point-blanking enemies before they can cause any serious trouble, then the Wide shot is probably the best (with auto-fire on, it's quite effective at speed-killing things). If you're more cautious and want to hang around the bottom of the screen, then I reckon you're probably better off with missiles.
