When I was younger (pre-25 probably ) I thought you had to hit every enemy and take every health/1up in the game you can't just skip over and move on. I thought its part of the game and if you don't do it you are cheating. Now I know why there was never enough bullets in Resident Evil 1
Well my "Year Challenge" is stalled at 1979. Turns out my top contenders are all two-players only. As I recall that was a bit of a trend back in the day. Don't program any computer AI and market the game as something to play with your friends.
Thankfully I found a "replacement" I can snag for cheap on eBay.

You mean you're not tag-teaming this with your daughter yet?

Occasionally.
The issue is that she refuses to use anything but a Sega Master System controller so our gaming selections are limited.

Because you can use a SMS controller with the Atari 2600.
Can you use it with a 7800? If so, that might be a great way for me to get through some old games...
I don't believe so. Google shows me a bunch of mods. Not all 9-pin controllers have cross-compatibility. For instance, you can't use an Atari joystick on a TI-99/4A, which is annoying.
