One piece -I'm glad this show is back with a vengence with funimation on dubbing, they may not be the most accurate dubbers but at least they get it mostly right(and they don't do that stupid 4kids crap that was pulled back in the original american dubs of it thankfully). Just too bad funi hasn't gotten the act together and gotten a channel out on apple tv...kinda awkward having to airplay it from my phone...working on trying to watch 2 or 3 episodes at a time so just met Brook and took long enough wish he would've come up sooner

Assassination Classroom - ok I'm a sucker for a catchy theme song but the show lives up to some of the stuff I'm used to with anime, plus I freaking love Kuro Sensei and Professor Vic(though the nickname is funnier for her
). Only wish more episodes were dubbed so I could continue multi-tasking and watching it at the same time....

I love that series. I also think it's a work that shows a lot of depth with its themes of growing up. I like how it's filled with as much wacky-goofy out-of-left-field stuff as possible, but that just makes the whole thing brilliantly multilayered.SonicGamer74 wrote:FLCL
After I first saw it, I watched Excel Saga since I heard that was similarly "crazy." It has the wacky/random factor but totally lacks the level of emotional resonance so it's a much weaker series.
I'm currently watching Princess Tutu, which I am COMPLETELY LOVING. I'm a fan of magical girl shows and the way this plays with the structure of anime TV shows, ballet, and nineteenth-century European fairy-tales is all great. PLUS it has wacky-goofiness. I'm only 7 episodes in but I'm convinced the whole series must be high-quality.
I'm also watching Hikaru no Go on Hulu because I've given up on holding out for a proper DVD release and I don't want to find out one day that the license has expired. It's fun: I like Go to begin with and sports anime can be a good time. The dynamics of the show are really interesting. I knew it was about a kid who becomes haunted by the ghost of a Go-master but I'm really enjoying how they explore the implications of that: how he can't really think of himself as a good Go player when the ghost plays the game, even though his rival is convinced that he is an expert.

FLCL is an absolutely fantastic show. It generally watch it about once a year since it's so short. Princess Tutu is a phenomenal show. I don't normally like magical girl shows l, but I was really taken with this one. Right now I'm making my way through the Gainax shows and movies with my friend. We just watched royal space force, so now it's time for Gunbuster!

The original Gunbuster OVAs are some of the greatest pieces of anime ever made.johnny turbo wrote:We just watched royal space force, so now it's time for Gunbuster!
Unfortunately the Diebuster series is nowhere near the same quality, but still fun for what it is.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Gunbuster is fantastic; it starts off pretty silly but becomes EXTREMELY SERIOUS by the end. IMO it's something to point to that signifies Hideaki Anno as an auteur, rather than someone who "got lucky" making Evangelion. I have a deep love for it; I even own the Gunbuster Revoltech! Gunbuster 2/Diebuster is also really great as long as you are expecting something completely different: aside from being way more modern/moe, it's largely lacking in the emotional poignancy that builds in the original series. But it's a lot of fun! While Gunbuster is filled with homages to anime tropes of the 70s-80s, Diebuster does that for the 2000s and I think it totally works on that level.
(...I'm pretty sure there's a Revoltech of Dix-Neuf from Diebuster. I should get that at some point...)
On the subject of early Gainax, I coincidentally got/watched both episodes of Blazing Transfer Student on laserdisc! I wouldn't recommend it to everyone: it's definitely no Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise or Gunbuster but it's a fun time and I enjoyed it!

I do not like Evangelion, but I do like a lot of Gainax's other stuff. If you haven't managed to scrounge up a copy of Otaku no Video, it's worth it just for how bizarre it is.

Gundam Wing is now 20 years old.... one of the greatest Gundam series IMHO

Justin Sevakis does such good write ups on things like that. For years I visited ANN just to read his stuff. I've always really liked Gunbuster. Definitely shows Anno had a lot of talent.
Nadia was also really well done with the exception of those dreadful island episodes. Those weren't even directed by him anyway. The island episodes are pretty much completely unimportant to the plot and can be skipped. I just wish Anno would do something other than these awful rebuilds. Episodes 1-24+ EOE is all I really need.
I actually really like Die Buster. It's worst sin was being positioned as a sequel to Gunbuster. It's not mind blowing or anything, but pretty damn entertaining. Anyone know if the Cutie Honey OVA that Anno directed ever got fan subbed? I have mixed feelings about Gundam Wing. I don't despise it, but it's far from my favorite Gundam series.

I do not either. I watched the original series and some extra stuff in the franchise but it was pretty much torture for me. The aesthetics were great, but the plot wasn't engaging (with glacial pacing) and the main protagonist was a panty waste.marurun wrote:I do not like Evangelion

Happy to see I'm not the only one that thinks this. I watched it wayyy back when and didn't understand the big deal, tried watching it again about a year ago and couldn't get through 6 episodes.Exhuminator wrote:I do not either.
