So it makes sense, because I thought its legal to own a gun in UK just like it is in America.Erik_Twice wrote:Common criminals don't have guns in Britain or most of Europe, nor do they want them (They are expensive, attract attention and open you to more than petty crime charges) so this scenario is fairly rare.RCBH928 wrote:Without a gun, what does the English police man do when a criminal pulls a gun on him?

Nope, we're very anti-guns here. I actually find the gun culture of America quite scary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politi ... ed_KingdomRCBH928 wrote:So it makes sense, because I thought its legal to own a gun in UK just like it is in America.Erik_Twice wrote:Common criminals don't have guns in Britain or most of Europe, nor do they want them (They are expensive, attract attention and open you to more than petty crime charges) so this scenario is fairly rare.RCBH928 wrote:Without a gun, what does the English police man do when a criminal pulls a gun on him?

You should worry more about our car culture. You're more likely to get killed in an auto accident here.alienjesus wrote: Nope, we're very anti-guns here. I actually find the gun culture of America quite scary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politi ... ed_Kingdom

Dangerous and blanket statistic. Without creating a definitive sample size relevant to the statistic itself, larger numbers make a statistic prone to be irrelevant.Ack wrote: You're more likely to get killed in an auto accident here.
Doesn't drive me crazy but it is irritating when people use statistics that aren't relevant. Like the "You're more likely do be bitten by a shark" or "You're more likely to be struck by lightning" when people don't add in the fact that most people don't swim in shark infested waters nor do they stroll outside during a thunderstorm holding a metal conductor.

Congrats, the same issue goes for firearms statistics.Luke wrote:Dangerous and blanket statistic. Without creating a definitive sample size relevant to the statistic itself, larger numbers make a statistic prone to be irrelevant.Ack wrote: You're more likely to get killed in an auto accident here.

Congrats? What'd I win and when can I get it?Ack wrote: Congrats, the same issue goes for firearms statistics.
And sure, the same goes for blanket firearm statistics. The South side of Chicago isn't the murder capital of the world, but peeps be dropping like phone calls. And then reporters say "Shockingly the state of Illinois proves that less than 50% of residents own guns". Well, most of Illinois is not the South side of Chicago, and all guns in Illinois are registered.
People are easily manipulated by stats as they're too lazy to give a s#it and question them. It's Presidential campaigning 101.
rant: And you still hear bs stats everyday that make zero sense. You'll hear "Best selling" in a lot of car adverts. "Best selling" is not quantitative, qualitative, nor categorical. It's saying "this car sells the best". What exactly is the car selling? Itself? It's features? It's tires? I have no clue, but I do know there's an ass ton of best selling cars.
And stats also go into price theories (love 'em) which I could go on an on about how there is no thing as "50% OFF!", and how I'd buy a pineapple that is simply labeled for $2.00 instead one that is "BOGO for $5.00!!!", but I like you guys, so I won't.

I've always found stuff like that fascinating, though it can make people mad. I remember getting mad at my dad as a young kid around 4th of July when he tried to convince me that just because firework stand A advertises buy 1 get 3 free doesn't mean the prices are cheaper than stand B that sells them for buy 1 get 2 free. He was right but having the illusion destroyed still made me mad for some reason.Luke wrote:And stats also go into price theories (love 'em) which I could go on an on about how there is no thing as "50% OFF!", and how I'd buy a pineapple that is simply labeled for $2.00 instead one that is "BOGO for $5.00!!!", but I like you guys, so I won't.

It's media in general and perception that matters. Let's go back to alienjesus, who comes from the UK. He's scared of our gun culture, probably because his perception of it is from our media. The opposite is also true though. In the UK, Muslim extremists butcher UK soldiers in the street, the local populace will likely beat your face in with a brick over a soccer match, and don't even broach the subject of Scottish or Irish independence. At least, according to the media that we see coming out of the UK.Luke wrote:Congrats? What'd I win and when can I get it?Ack wrote: Congrats, the same issue goes for firearms statistics.

Actually, it's discussions like the one we had on here a while back I find alarming, when it's people I'd otherwise talk to about other things, but I do get your point.Ack wrote: It's media in general and perception that matters.
